Spare wheel

A couple of years back there was a company supplying a spare wheel (skinny) that fit 997.1

It was supplied in deflated state and fit into the front trunk, cost (if I recall) some £180 or so.

Anyone remember that and if so, where can I get one and will it fit (ie: taking into account brake calipers/discs) both front and rear of a 997.2?

thanks

The 997.1 and 997.2 wheels are identical sizes/offsets so the skinny should fit both. IIRC the plan, if you lost a rear, was to put the skinny on the front and the front of the rear? Geoff997 on here has such a thing I believe so maybe he will be along to advise![;)]

I bought the Porsche "collapsible" spare and associated items from a German OPC a few years ago. Hopefully you will be able to make out the part numbers from the attached image

The Non inflated type as fitted to 996 models will fit the 997 300mm discs with no issues. But for the 997S 330mm discs you will need a 7mm spacer and longer bolts (red collar type) to clear the front caliper. It will not fit the Turbo 6 pots and 350mm discs.

The Pre inflated 17" Boxster type will fit all, however for Turbo models the spacer is required. Also for Turbo and 4 wheel drive versions space in the front compartment may not be sufficient to house this wheel? In my experience the longer bolts are required for all with this wheel type to achieve a safe number of threads engaged.

Both wheel types appear regularly for sale on ebay. The longer bolts are availabe from OPC's and some indipendants at reasonable cost. Don't forget you will also need a jack, wheelbrace and wheel alignment helper tool.

One other point to mention. The 996 space save is actually a smaller rolling radius than the 997 wheel or space saver , as a result you either need to de activate PSM or be aware you will get PSM and possibly ABS warning lights whilst driving on a space saver. The dash light error messages will clear once the car has the correct wheel fitted or if the ignition is turned off and the car started and PSM de activated before driving. With the skinny 986 (17" pre inflated space saver) and jack in the front of a non 4wd/Gt3 model , there is still space for luggage (decent sized suitcase) its also about 7kg lighter than the wider 165 section "official collapsable spare. The cost of the complete wheel, jack , foam insert, cover and tools for the 997/987 is over 700 pounds , so a used 996/986 wheel is far more attractive considering the likelyhood of use. I had the original space saver OEM unit and all the tools , cover etc , but decided to sell it as its much easier to carry the 986 unit and it weighs a lot less.

A friend of mine purchased the complete brand new set of 17" wheel, tools and bag for £50 on eBay. Seller turned out to be a certain dealership in Reading, which is where he collected from! Now why wasn't I so lucky when I bought mine?[:(]
