Spare Wheels & Setups

Guys,

I did search the forum before posting this but didn't find what I was looking for.

I'm contemplating a second set of wheels/tyres for this years activity and am considering either a set of std Cup 1's or a set of 18" speedlines. I'm only ruling out the second set of Mags option on the basis of costs (should 've bought that set off you Des.)

If I go down the Speedline route does anyone know whether I'd need to re setup the car (corner weights, alignment, geometry etc etc) each time I switch the wheels. Also will I need to even if I go for the std Cup 1's?

Also does anyone know the weights of the options ie Mags vs Speedlines vs Cup 1s?

Hi James, I had 18" Speedlines on mine and they are much heavier than Mags. The difference in the steering was significant and I would be very careful about buying heavier wheel than standard. I know RS,s raced with 18" speedlines but were they the ones that we can now buy?
I have had new shocks and setup at JZ and the difference is fantastic. The steering is perfect. The shocks were weak and had dropped a little and I put that down to the heavy wheels and I suppose a bit of old age.

Hi Jeff....good to hear from you. When I was reveiwing the previous posts I came across your similar comments then....and I thank you for them again. Speaking to Brian @ Jasmine he suggested the SLines were a good 12-15kg heavier all round and I really don't want to add weight for vanity or more rubber. On that basis I'll probably end up with a set of Cup1's which have an 8kg penalty but are significantly less £. ...but now I've got to find some good ones with 7.5 fronts as opposed to the 7 fronts on most of the available ones? and look out for some mags.

Also you're right that the Speedlines run on the cup cars were 10's not the 11's that appear to be more available now! I also read that the mags run on the initial cup cars were a different size again to those run on the RS themselves? Mel?

On the shocks front....I fear I'm going to have to go down that route soon....do you mind sharing your choice and costs? and experience of JZ?

"I also read that the mags run on the initial cup cars were a different size again to those run on the RS themselves? Mel? "

Correct.

While not as good looking as Cup 1 wheels (IMO), I think the Cup 2 wheels off a 993 will also fit and have correct off set (ET55) and rim width. These are more widely available than Cup 1s and therefore usually cheaper. Might be a good option for a second set of wheels. There were a set for sale on the forum with (worn) Michelin Cups for GBP 250 which seemed a good buy. Jasmine and the usual suspects usually have some in stock. Do you still have your SO 2/3 road tyres that you took off the RS?

Would you be using the mags for track days or the second set?

See you Monday.

Feroz,

thing is have a set of those already which I would ideally part ex against the new cups primarily because they don't look in keeping. Also I think the new wheels available from Jasmine et al are 7 and not 7.5 fronts.

I'm after another set to do trackdays and allow me to get mine refurbed.

See you monday!

Hi James,
Took mine in for alignment which showed up on the RS day at JZ. They rang and said the shocks were a bit weak and that there was a little bit of a leak at the bottoms but not serious and would be OK for say another 10K or so. I decided that I may as well have them done there and then rather than pay twice for alignment.
The shocks were £228.77 each alignment £220.00 plus labour not sure about that as I had other work carried out plus Vat.
I have been going to JZ for a long time and find them excellent and no bullshit!
Chris who does the alignment does loads of RS,s and GT3,
The have an excellent website with a menue of prices.

I bought my car from directly from Germany and it came with the genuine Speedlines already fitted and the rears I am pretty sure are 9.5". A bit clueless at the time figured it was a bonus till everyone reckoned if you buy an RS then make sure you have the Mags.

Still I didn't and had to purchase a set last year.

I fitted a set of rather heavy Pilot Cup Sports to them and found very little difference when I weighed both sets. Also I noticed the cup 1/cup sport combo to be much harsher in terms of bumps and I can only put it down to the fact that the sidewalls must be stiffer.

Dispite this the car does seem lighter on the steering at speed therefor the little difference in weight must have an effect.
