Spark plug tubes ...

... what are they ?

Just about to get my 996 back from its annual and have been told I needed 3 new 'spark plug tubes' as the old ones were leaking ! Can't picture what they are or where they sit - anyone have any ideas ?

Fortunately, the spark plug tubes (£160 something) and two new air-con condensors (£1013 fitted) were both done under warrantee (phew!)

You can see the oil in this pic. Right above the oil is the spark plug coil. Under the coil is the tube and inside the tube is spark plug. It is a plastic tube with an o-ring on each end.

Common source of leaks in the older cars. On the Boxster the tubes were eliminated for model year 2003, and a seal used instead. Don't know about the 996, maybe Richard knows. If I were to guess I would say in 2002 when the 3.6 VarioCamPlus came out.

Thought so. For 2003 the Boxster got VarioCamPlus heads without the Plus. On the 2003-2004 Boxster cam cover the word Plus was ground off. The lowley Boxster once again getting hand-me-downs from the Carrera....

Here is a picture of the tubes.

Thanks all - funny design to have plastic tubes under the rocker cover (if I'm understanding that correctly).

Yes it is. They slide in from the outside, sealing the gap between the cam cover and the cylinder head, and are prevented from coming out by the coil packs. On 3.6s the cam carrier (15) itself forms the 'tube' and has 'O' rings on top and bottom faces (28 & 29) to provide the seal.

Book time is 54 minutes for the first tube, and 12 minutes for subsequent tubes.
