Spark plugs

My 997s is due its first 4yr service which as we all know sounds pretty reasonable at £610 until you add on the "necessary" extras.
Spark plugs at £200 sounds very steep, Anyone changed them at home ? what sort of a job is it and whats the cost ?

Is this actually a replacement of all six coil packs? If so then £200 sounds right as I was charged 6 by £32 (plus Vat of course) earlier this month by my local indy. The also charged me for one hour of labour (to give you some idea of how easy a job it is - but you'll need a hoist to do it!).

BTW they also told me that they also charge for one hour to replace just one coil pack so it probably makes sense to do all six at once.

Hope this helps

I'm a Ex Porsche technician and to change the spark plugs is pretty easy you just need to remove the heat shield then a T30 star drive bit (torx bit) to remove the coils and then a spark plug socket with a small extension on it and that's just about it. They take about 1 hr to change if the main dealer replace them and if you need coils at the same time you shouldn't have to pay any extra cost on labour but you will have the cost for the coils that are cracked and you probably will have one or two. You may have a bit of a problem refitting the coil plug on bank two coil plug four as you have the cam oil sensor in the way but take your time and I will be ok. Hope this helps.

Many thanks, its the plugs only on the service so thought I would save a bit of cash and replace them myself bring an ex motor engineer. I suppose the coils are easy to see if they are cracked ?

Hi Hannu,

I have 997C2S from 2004 and at the 4 year service the OPC also wanted to change the sparkplugs and coils. Since the car was running fine, I told them to leave them as they are unless the coils were cracked. He could not give me a good reason to change them other than it is on their list of things to do/charge, so it did not happen. I have since driven for another 2 years without any issues.

Just had a similar conversation with an opc regarding a Cayman due a 40k service. So fixed price £610 service plus brake fluid (£150) plugs (£150) and if you don't change them they can become seized, sir. So we're now looking at a grand... doh!

A lot more expensive on the 996 TT (don't know about the 997 TT) because the rear bumper has to come off. It's all a bit cramped in there, so I don't think £200 is too bad.

Thats very helpful thanks, just had a look and it looks simple enough to do, any idea what size of torx socket I will need to remove the heat shield ? looks a bit bigger than T30.

Well for those who fancy it I've just finished the job.

Jacked the rear up, removed the heat shields (Tx40 female), removed the coils (Tx40 male) and changed the plugs.

Went to Andrew Page for the Bosch plugs which are exactly the same as OE £25.59
Had to buy both Tx Teng sockets £4.29

It took me about 1 1/2 hours taking it easy because it is a bit fiddly but the saving speaks for itself.

Having to take a trip to the OPC tomorrow to buy two coils to replace those that have cracked @ £31 + VAT but they would have been been on top of the quoted price anyway and don't seem to be any cheaper elsewhere.

Well !!!! is it me being a right tight ar** or does owning a Porsche mean you have to have bottomless pockets ?

Went along to the OPC today to pick up a couple of coils, "Yes sir you will need six" err no two please and its only precautionary because the outer case has cracked. "Oh when you put them back they will crack and you'll have a misfire" Ah I have put the other four back and they didn't crack, anyway these two have the outer plastic completely cracked away and they were not misfiring! "Ah well sir you can't always see the crack but because they are subject to temp change sooner or later they will start misfiring"
Sooner or later my tyres will wear down to the legal limit but I wont change them to they do !.

So came away with two coils fitted and runs fine, Or should I have bought six ?

If it had been under warranty, I have a good idea how many they would have fitted.... and its less than 5 [;)]

Well done on this, not something I'd do myself....

Did you take any picture ??? Be great to do an article on this...

Sorry no I didn't take any Photo's,

However I will take some of the coils I took out and post them on here.

If there is enough interest and I get the chance I will jack the back end up again and take some photo without the heat shield's on and describe the procedure step by step.

As my car is coming up for four years old I would certainly be interested. The plugs and coils are avilable on Eurocarparts by the way, Bosch coils are £24 each delivered.

On a similar matter, I've just had the 4 year service and MOT for a total of £815. But when I told them I had my own oil, they told me they couldn't use fluids brought in, they had to use their own stock. In fairness to the OPC they did reduce my charge for the oil by a good bit, it was cheaper than buying my own... I did ask the Service Manger why this came to be, I was told it was because Porsche audit them every few months and if they don't show they use the correct fluids they get a slap on the wrists and also the warranty could be invalidated. That old nugget. It does seem as though Porsche GB are being a bit to controlling if this is their attitude.
