Spark plugs

Car is a 2003 Boxster 'S', owned from new, with 20,000 on the clock (bit of a garage queen, I'm afraid). The service schedule says the spark plugs should be changed at the 4 year service, which I didn't have done due to the low mielage on the car.

Now the OPC says I should have them done as they can corrode in. Does that happen? Should I get them done? Or is the OPC trying to drum up work. (Had the service done a few weeks back the service bays weren't busy, and that was a Saturday morning).

Any help would be appreciated.

Eric

I think the spark plug change cost is around 140 pounds btw. In any case 4 years is probably a wise guide. If you are technically able you could change these yourself and you'll save the labour charge, 6 spark plugs will cost you around 75 pounds at dealer pricing. Here is a good link detailing the spark plug change and spark plug tube replacement (if required): [link=http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/Change_Spark_Plugs_%26_Tubes.html]http://www.pedrosgarage.com/Site_3/Change_Spark_Plugs_%26_Tubes.html[/link]

Its four years regardless and I had mine done at 12,000 - good independent is worth a call. does not distract from any warranty.

6 plugs will cost you around £30 and 1hr of work, easy to do yourself, but i dont accept that without change they will corrode in. The plug threads form an airtight seal with the plugs - no moisture can get to the threads so corrosion cannot take place, however after 4 years it is sensible to change them.

Had mine changed at the 4 year service (987S) with 23k miles on them - waste of time, the old ones are like new, perfect condition.

I have heard of 993's with seized plugs as well as boxsters. £34 will buy a set of either Beru or Bosch plugs IIRC; Beru - 14FGR6KQU Bosch - FGR 6KQC They are quite awkward to replace but well worth it IMHO. Car will feel different with new plugs.
