Speakers - A Huge Improvement

The interior rear quarter panels in my S2 were looking tatty as whoever owned the car before me had clearly removed them at some stage but simply sliced through the vinyl rather than peeling back the window seal to carefully remove the tucked under edges.

Anyway, rather than leave it or bodge it I decided to get some fresh panels and replace all of the speakers whilst I was in there as 4x6 all round isn't exactly a good recipe for sound quality as many of us know.

So, in the front I went like for like sizewise and installed some 4x6 Alpine SXE-4625S 2 ways but also put 100Hz bass blockers on them as their range is quite high up (90Hz minimum) and the old speakers always struggled with bass.

In the rear I took advantage of the cutouts for 17cm speakers and mounted some Pioneer TS-G1701i dual cone jobbies. I decided I didn't want 2 or 3 ways in the back as I prefer my high notes to come from the front of the vehicle so I just wanted these to deal with the low end. I also blocked the holes that used to house the 4x6 speakers with some thick card (well, the cover of one of my girlfirend's hardback books - it was in the garage so I'm crossing my fingers she'll never know) that I cut to shape.

My final 'improvement' was that rather than use the basic style of rear panel again I used 968/10 speaker panels as their speaker grilles are better placed for using the larger rear speakers.

Clearly better/more expensive setups can be installed as can bigger speakers/subs etc but I didn't want to cut any metal or modify any trim.

The result is fantastic, real night and day stuff. Whereas previously I'd have to keep the volume and bass down to avoid crackling/distortion now I can play what I want as loud as I would ever want and still retain quality. In fact my ears currently hurt from the testing process earlier when I was hunting for vibrations so it certainly goes louder than I would ever want to have it and without any distortion too!

Just thought I'd share as speaker setups are often mentioned on here.

Great write up Matt. Don't suppose you have any pictures of the install?
I would love to do something like this to my own car and following pictures makes me feel cosy.....

My Pink Floyd CDs crackle and distort through the standard set-up.

You said that you covered the 6x4 holes in the rear. Where did you mount the 17s or do the newer cars have space for more speakers?

Mine only has space for a 6x4 behind each panel so I was thinking of making up an adapter plate from MDF or something to fit some different speakers depending on how much space I have back there.

Turn it down Rav, you aging hippy you.

I'll grab a couple of snaps of the 17s in place before I put the panels back securely (I was just heading out to the garage to do it).

Yeah the later cars have space for 17s as standard as that space would have been used if you had the 10 speaker option. They sit just forward of the 4x6 which is why I wanted the 968/10 speaker panels so the had a better chance of being heard.

Hopefully a picture will make it clear.

Okay, pics as requested. This is the old speaker and mount in there as standard.

And this is how it looks with the 968/10 speaker panel fitted. There's a bit of white adhesive on the window rubber from a previous clumsy owner that I've now removed.

I found the best thing to ease the vinyl out from under the window seal and to replace it was a plastic bicycle tyre lever to hold the seal up and a cheap trim wedge I bought at a car fair to ease out/ease back in the vinyl. A wide screwdriver with its end wrapped in insulating tape to ensure it doesn't tear the vinyl would do the same job as a trim wedge.

So, that's all done without removing the windows.

Later cars have more space, with a filler plate used to mount the old 6"x4".

Changing the subject slightly - I have just fitted a new stereo - Navstar - but kept the old speakers and its showing up their shortcomings!
However - the radio reception is even worse than before - what is the accepted standard for aerials? Stick with the original screen system? Change to something else?
Also, anyone know any car hifi specialists in northants?

Thanks

That looks great. Well done!

Would look even better in a black interior. Hmm "¦

I would guess that you have not re-connected the power lead for the aerial amplifier correctly. I did the exact same thing when fitting a new head unit a few months ago and lost all but the most local of stations until I connected it properly.

I highly recommend Steve Mathers who runs In-Ka Audio in Northampton, as well as the usual audio, hands free and security systems he is also a whiz at sorting out auto-electrical gremlins. Call him on 07788 627766 or 01604 755220 and tell him Paul from ChipsAway sent you his way

lovely job wigeon. You've fired up my enthusiasm now. My speakers are dire well only the left front and right rear work and the distortion is awful.
Thanks for sharing it with us

If the windscreen amplifier is connected properly (the lead that follows the aerial is a power supply) the reception is superb. If it isnt then the amplifier isnt working or the connections are poor.

I havent had a better reception with a non DAB in any car than with the 944 windscreen aerial.
