Hi Guy's

My 996 has the upgraded stereo pack, amplifier, door speakers etc, I want to change the door speakers as they are old and paper, my thoughts are to go with Focal 130VRS, which I am led to believe are a direct fit. Has anyone else tried these? if so are they any good.

Also I want to keep the head unit original and the speaker covers, any suggestion on mods for the dash and rear speaker?

Any help greatly appreciated

Would be interested in how you get on. I changed the dash speakers in mine (986 with Sound System) and it really helped. Do post photos if you go through the process.

Here's a link to a post about speakers a little while back with links back further to some lenghty posts on the subject.
Post about speakers

And I've still got the unused MB Quarts if anyone is interested ;-)

Thanks Guy's,

I spoke to a supplier yesterday for the 130's, he claimed I would have to re wire the whole car, remove the amp just to fit the 130's in the doors. Mechanically I am pretty ok, electrics not my speciality, however i am confident that I would just have to fit the 130's in the door, minor change to the plugs, and switch on. I would not use the tweeter or the cross over that comes with the kit, so I think he may be wrong, what do you think chaps??

He might be assuming you want full range audio in the doors - which would require extra holes in the door cards to be effective.

With the Sound Package, the system "crosses over", ie: filters, the signal to the doors actively, meaning that it simply doesn't send audio to the door speakers that can't usefully be reproduced - no point firing treble frequencies at your legs coz they won't appreciate it. The Focal kits all seem to contain a pair of tweeters, a pair of passive crossovers and a pair of woofers. For door use just ignore the tweeters and crossovers since they simply won't get any used - flog the unused bits on eBay.

These people list a big range of 13cm / 5.25" drivers: http://caraudiosecurity.com

A slight snag might be that the door speakers used in the M490 audio option pack are 2 ohm impedance, whereas most aftermarket units are 4 ohms. (Dash & rear speakers are 4 ohm). I don't know what difference it would make, but I would guess it would reduce the volume output of the door speakers to fit 4 ohm.

Thanks guy's, I have checked the the door speakers and they are 2 ohm, I want to keep the doors as woofers only, any further thoughts on the ohm problem??

Bose drivers are normally very low impedance - wonder if you could find a pair of those in the right size?

You shouldn't do any damage to the amplifier by having higher impedance speakers.

However, for maximum power transfer the speaker impedance should be matched to the amplifier output impedance. Therefore, I would suggest that you might be a little disappointed when you switch on your newly modified system and find the volume levels aren't what you were expecting.

Bit of an update, spoke to the guy's at JM Garages, they have the 9xx kit for the Alpine speakers, getting four of those and they are also finding me a 4 ohm woofer for the doors, will post results up when I have completed it

Guy's

Took the plunge and got the speakers, I went for the 9xxx alpine conversion, so easy to fit but the difference in sound is so brilliant, how we live with those awful paper ones! for the money it transforms the car, the door ones will be here next week to complete the process, the other great thing is the car looks original

On my previous C4S I did the JMG alpine upgrade and it made a massive difference whilst still looking original to all intents and purposes. Well worth the money

Hi Diesel

£119.00 for the dash and rear speakers, £138.00 for the front woofers, thats the speakers and fitting kit, leads etc, postage and packing very cheap, they will fit for you but to be honest it is very easy, I would be happy to offer any advise.

exciting news, the door speakers arrived today, even if they sound crap they certainly look the part! I will update when I have fitted them
