Speakers for 944 S2 cab

I am looking to replace the front and rear speakers in my 944 S2 cab.
Please can someone advice me what size and makes & models if possible. I was told that Rainbow speaker are quite good and wonder if they will fit the 944 S2 cab?

Charles

You can fit big speakers in the front. I had 6x9 in mine. This is because you have a quarterlight, hence the moving part of the window is further back in the door creating space (unless you have the 10 speaker pack when you're out of luck). In the back you need to stick to 6x4 or maybe 6" round if you can be bothered with the hassle.

Front and back it's easier in a cab than a coupe. I have no idea on specific models. I have a pair of Infinity Reference components to go in the 964 when I get time as I have never had a bad set of Inifinitys and they aren't fortunes. Cars and especially cabs, don't really benefit from fantastic sound quality due to the ambient noise and compromised fitment, so there is no point going mad IMO.

I am also considering of putting bigger (but slimmer) speakers on the back shelf of the cabriolet since I don't really find any good usage of the shelf apart from for resting the canvas roof when its down. Any suggestions? I am looking for some decent speakers with smaller and slimmer footprint which doesn't use much space and not too deep.

Charles

Charles, the roof motors are under the rear shelf. I don't think there is space to fit speakers also they would be useless with the roof down, which should be everytime you drive & its not monsoon weather.

Oh dear. I didn't know that. All I can see when I open the boot lid is that there is only carpet stuck onto the shelf.

I have just took out the speakers on the front to realise the fitting provision. It seems that the metal speaker mount has only four screw holes where my current 4x6 are mounted on and I can't see there are other screw holes that will allow bigger speakers fittings e.g. 6x9. The rear one are 6x4 which can be a straight swap.

Charles

That's what I thought. The mounting points on the front speakers mount are 5" and 3" apart which I think is the standard mount size for 6x4.

Re. Door cards modification, I assume its just to cut the hole bigger right? Hiw about the metal work, are there adapter plates that I can put on the current mount points?

Charles

JBL and Infinity make 6x4 that could be a straight swap for the original front units. I think that the model of the JBL's is 6426/7 GTO but you might want to check.

I take it with these aftermarket speakers you can still fit the standard speaker grills? I would imagine if you got a 2-way speaker where the tweater protruded above the rim of the main speaker cone it would prevent the use of the standard speaker grill.

Just out of interest, where are the speakers positioned in the cars fitted with the 10-speaker upgrade pack?

In the 10 speaker cars the door pocket behind the divider part is full of speakers, there are two tweeters in the front of the door cap and they have different speakers in the back that fill in the arm rest shape in the rear trims slightly.

All the decent speakers that I looked are without cover grills[&:] except the In-Phase British made one. Are the In-Phase speakers as good as the Inifinity and JBLs?

I may just buy the cover grills (to stop the endless hunting) and wonder if Porsche still makes them and how much?

Charles

I wouldn't buy anything other than JBL or Infinity. I have never heard of the brand you mention but with a name like that i'm not surprised. You can still get the grilles as I had 2 of mine replaced with original Porsche parts during recent service. There are a quite a few breakers on eBay breaking 924 and 944 at the moment so you should certainly try them out.
