To do the fronts is easy but you will have to put a spacer between the door card and the speaker grill when you replace it to accommodate any decent size of speaker cone. search not too hard and you will instructions on here how to do it. The cards will have to come out of the rear in order to change them yes. I am lucky mine came pre-done :)))) lol.

ORIGINAL: AntB Guys, Had the stero up load toay and the speakers are - shall we say - not really up to it.. So - how easy are they to change? Fronts are obviously 6x9, are the rears also?? To do the fronts it doesnt look like you need to remove the door cards - but am I wrong? And as for the rears - not sure???? anyone know how to get to them? Cheers A
In my 944 lux the fronts are 6x4's not 6x9's. One of mine has started buzzing during 'bassy' tracks. Does anyone know what the maximum depth of speaker for the front doors is. I presume it must be around 5cm. The door cards do not need to be removed for the fronts. The rears are apparently more tricky.

I think dirty harry is correct. Been a while since I had mine out but the hole for them to fit in is deffo for 6 x 4s I think.

Is it possible to put 6.5" speakers into a '44? I have been considering door pods but I am not sure if the door would shut then...

Later cars have a larger round apeture in the rear, whichll be covered by a plate in cars without the Nokia speaker upgrade. Youll have to remove the rear quarter window to get to them though (remove the aluminium trim and remove the window; then you can take the rear quarter trim out). Simon

hmm - not sure I fancy removing the rear glass to replace the speakers.... Is it relativly simple? - am I likley to need new window rubbers or anything once removed? Cheers

It's actually easier than it may appear to get the rear side windows out to get the interior side panels off - I did it myself a couple of weeks ago and believe me, I'm no mechanic. There's a how-to guide on Clarks Garage so have a look there. Just take your time about it, although that said, it was no more than 90 minutes to do it all when I did it.

I replaced my rear speakers recently and did not need to take the side windows out. I carefully slid the overlap out from under the seal and then carefully fed it back in under the seal using a little flat blade screwdriver to lift the seal as I went along. You can get 6.5 inch round speakers in there with a bit of fiddling! I have also fitted 6.5 inch round speakers at the front with minimal fuss, slight nibbling of the door card sufficed and they don't foul on anything except maybe your knees when you get in and out![:D]

Prey tell, It was the fronts that I was thinking of. I have a lovely set of 6.5" Rainbow Prototype components ready to go in. Currently it has the old tired Blaupunkts in. If a 6.5" speaker cannot be solidly mounted, what 6x4s have satisfied people here?

People often suggest JBL 6 x 4's for the front (which can easily be picked up on fleabay) but have to say when I installed some in my previous car I was hard pressed to tell the difference from the originals. [&:]

I assure you that its easier to take the windows out, than mess about in the way described. Just see that you dont damage the delicate aluminium trim which 'locks' the rubber.

Or think about your neighbours and keep the stereo turned down so the speakers don't distort. If you lived oppsite a newsagent like I do you would understand what I am talking about. As a bonus you wont be having to rely on a hearing aid by the time you are forty. In industry it is generally understood that Low frequency thuds like the repeteteive bass sound require anyone within earshot to wear hearing protection.

I had to cut away enough of the door panel to accept the back of the speaker and let the rim sit flush on the door card then just bolted them up. There is only a couple of mm between speakers and dash with door shut but they fit fine. In response to 944 man, 10 minutes a side with my "fiddly" technique and no chance of damaged aluminium!

I bought some JBL speakers for the front of my old 944 turbo. About £40 from a local specialist. Like John says, they didn't make any difference. I just resided myself to the thought that the Porsche was made for driving with engine sound rather than the Eurythmics. I have seen some 944s with a 10 speaker upgrade. Would be interesting to know where the speakers are installed and who made them? If not so rare, im sure a breaker like Douglas Valley would have a car with this system in? Not a great picture and not my car, but you can see the 6 x 9 here:

and a similar thing here too:

In an amazing coincidence you have pictured my car there with the burgundy interior. You know it well as you went down to Dorset to see it when it was for sale for £4,495! Anyway, I know have slightly bigger 6.5" speakers there that look like the bottom picture. Off topic but thought you might like to know I got the car for £3k and had to do 2 cv joints, 2 brake discs and a new temp gauge. Car has done 3000 faultless miles since. Will need the sill doing at some point! Cheers Stuart

The speakers in the ten speaker cars were made by Nokia. They were alright then; but theyre not particularly impressive now. More than adequate for the Eurythmics, of course...

As Simon said, from what I've seen of them, they don't look anything great. For one the speaker positioning is quite wrong...

I will have to agree to disagree there ;).

I seem to have speakers everywhere in the doors on mine, so I presume it has the 10 speaket kit? I did see a 3 speaker set on eBay recently that was meant to be an 'upgrade' and directly replaces the set of speakers i have under the door armrest, anyone seen/tried those?
