Brilliant isn't it
- ignore the road for years while traffic on it grows enormously
- finally succumb to public pressure to do something about it (only when it finally got to the top of the "deadly roads" charts)
- Spend squillions converting it to dual-carriageway and actually making it safe
- stick these b4stard things on it
- coin in the cash to recoup costs of making the road and boast about the decrease in accidents due to your SPECS system.

I saw them last week and thought they were the first ones I had seen here. Coventry, where I go on Business sometimes has loads..... Got to keep us motorists under control amd skint!

Safety campaign refutes camera partnership's claims
M4 cameras: too early to call? Road safety organisation Safe Speed has refuted yesterday's claims by the Swindon and Wiltshire camera partnership (SWCP) that the M4's speed cameras, which were switched on in April, have reduced crashes on the M4 motorway. According Safe Speed, its claims are statistically invalid.
There are four main errors in the claims, said Safe Speed:
- Cherry picking. The SWCP has chosen a 'comparison group' intended to support its claims. This exaggerates the benefits.
- Bias by selection. (also known as regression to the mean). SWCP started with its camera vans on the M4 because the figures were at an unusually high level. With that as a starting point, it's perfectly natural for the figures to tend to reduce. This is a huge effect and endemic in camera partnership claims.
- Other effects. Although the partnership claims that 'nothing else has changed' on the M4, that's simply not true. There are extensive road works at J18, and those road works may well be having an effect on traffic.
- Too soon to tell. Accidents are essentially random in nature and this means that long periods of observation are required to make valid comparisons. The usual recommendation of professional traffic engineers is five years before and five years after. The cameras only went live in April.
Paul Smith, founder of Safe Speed's campaign said: "I've completely lost count of the times that wild and unjustified claims have been made by camera partnerships. It's become par for the course. It makes me incredibly angry because we depend on accurate road safety information in order to deploy resources to save lives. Claims like these cause death because they cause resources to be misallocated."
Smith said: "Camera partnerships are riding a runaway gravy train that must be stopped. Speed cameras don't save lives - they just distract everyone from real road safety. We won't get back on track until we scrap the infernal devices."

My other car has cruise control and I usually set it at 70 -80mph. I am constatly having to adjust it due to lorries or traffic slowing up.
Do you think these camera will create more revenue? More driving frustration I think!

I'm sure they will generate both.........and quite possibly more accidents, though not necessarily on the road under surveilance
Road closed between Minishant and Ayr yesterday due to a bad accident right in the middle of the average speed cameras. So as we all know speed is not the only cause of accidents. Happened at a small junction. Official line will no doubt be 'would have been worse if cameras had not been keeping speeds to the legal limit'

Did you also know that every time your car goes a mile or so over the limit [FONT=arial"][FONT=courier new"]it is registered and placed on the database?
You only get a ticket if you are 10% + 2mph over the limit or if you receive 20 near misses! You can now check how many you have against your car's registration number. [FONT=arial"] [FONT=arial"][FONT=arial"][FONT=courier new"]Go to this website: [FONT=courier new"]http://www.e-database.co.uk/
[FONT=arial"][FONT=arial"][FONT=courier new"]It will ask you for a password - but just click on the "need a login" button and you'll be given one on the pop up window. On the right there is a click-on button which even shows the picture taken!!!!!!!!
[FONT=arial"][FONT=arial"][FONT=courier new"]Try it out on your reg....it's frightening what goes on that we don't know about.

Try entering a registration for a car that you know was scrapped years ago...............
Another bad accident today. This time at the junction of the A719 and the B7023 now a much favoured route to aviod three sets of cameras between Maybole and Girvan. This road has become MUCH busier in the last month. One car burnt out another overturned. No info. on casualties yet. Road closed for nearly 2 hours. Cameras directly responsible for this accident??? Not as good a road as the A77 but people still do 60mph+++ on it.
