Speedo cable

I know that the 944'shave a mechanical speedo pick-up in the transaxel but the in-dash speedo is electric. This means there must be a transducer somewhere that converts the rotary motion of the speedo pick up to an electrical signal. Does anyone know where this transducer is? I need to pick up the wire and don't fancy pulling out my binnacle. I'd rather pick the wire up from somewhere more accessable.

On my '90 S2 the mechanical speedo pick-up on the transaxle you mention is also the transducer. Only electrical wires are connected to it. Is the '87 turbo not similar?
 
I'm sure turbo's are the same, i've not had a look. What route does this wire take on its journey to the back of the speedo?
