Speedo does not work yet rev counter is fine?

Okay i have a 1986 oval and the speedo does not work yet every other gauge in the cluster works.

Usually if the speedo does not work the rev counter also is affected

Any advice on the potential issue would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

+ 1 for that mate. Top of the gearbox on the left hand side as viewed from the back. About 24mm spanner to remove IIRRC.

On the later cars the speedo is driven electrically by a contact on the transaxle which can delaminate.

If that's the problem it's quite an easy fix to replace it.

Edit - damn, too slow!! But at least we all agree!! [:D]

I thought it was the sensor but i also thought that the rev counter would be affected or is that separate and from reference sensor on bellhousing,

cheers for replies

Elliot,
I had a speedometer which worked sometimes and then stopped altogether.
Mileage and trip also worked initially and then stopped. The view on the forum was that the most likely cause was the sender. My car is an automatic and I had a great deal of difficulty finding where the sender was.

I eventually replaced the speedometer head with one obtained from e-bay. PET appeared to show that the only difference between UK heads is that there are separate senders for manual and automatic.
The replacement head works and shows correct speed and distance travelled.

The speedometer head change was quite simple with assistance from Clarke's Garage instrustions for repairing the odometer.

Anyone know what the speedo sensor is maybe hall effect or VR? I might be able to use it as a speed input into my DME. Would be usefull for working out what gear the car is in and working out accelleration etc.
