Speedo help

Hi All.......First post.
Just got myself a 928 GT and loving it, besides the usual elec probs, my speedo is not working ! Anyone any ideas where i should start ?
Also whilst i love the looks, from side on it looks like the wheels are too small !! Is it possible to fit larger alloys or am i asking for a heap of trouble ?
Thanks, John.

Hi John :)

Welcome and you can go up several sizes if you wish...

My S2 for example has 18 x 10 rears instead of normal 7 x 16
and 18 x 7.5 fronts instead of 7 x 16

Just be careful when you buy larger that you get the offsets roughly correct :)

I know for a fact that one early 928 had 19 inch Cayenne wheels on it :)

All the best Brett :)

John, I had recent speedo problems in my 993, you don't say age of your 928, but it may also have an electrical speedo.

If the odometer does still works then problem is inside the speedo and you may need a replacement. Apart from breakers you can try these people: http://www.speedycables.com/

If the odometer does not work (which was my case) the problem was simply a cable issue and replacing the cable behind the dash fixed it. Looks like my cable had been damaged by some radio change fiddling. Others had fixed same with some cleaning of contacts.

All this advice a waste of time if speedo is mechanical!

Thanks for the quick reply's......Its a 1989 model with digital display for mileage etc.
Brett if you do go up in size, does it not effect the tyre pressure monitors or other elec gizzmo's that monitor the ABS etc ?
John.

Hi John :)

Your speedo is electrical..running off the gearbox at the back...try a continuity test working from the back end forwards....if not check back here for further advice..

Wheels.....only the GTS had the RDK sensors and are bigger than yours...BUT...they run at different pressures so rdk need altering....most people just disabe the rdk system and go for bigger wheels with no rdk sensors in them :)

All the best Brett :)

are all the speedos not electric then as my car is a v plate and the speedo is electric does not work though

Hi :)

OOps forgot to add there is a speedo connector that gets loose under the hatch carpet....

Worth a look...

All the best Brett :)

Brett, thanks for all this, when you say hatch carpet, do you mean where the spare wheel is ?
John.

Hi Brett
Found the electrical connector and pulled it apart, we put a multimeter on and got a reading but when we jacked the wheels up and selected a gear the reading did not change so am i right in assuming that the problem is inside the diff ? I have read that there is a disc with magnets and this is what the sensor picks up registering your speed ?
Kind rgds.....John
P.S The exhaust is awesome, sounds like a nascar.
