speedo problem

my S2 has developed an intermittent fault. Sometimes the speedo (and odometer) refuses top work at all; sometimes the needle flies up and down like its copying the rev counter, most of the time it works fine. If I drive really hard when its not working I find its starts again - like its got fed up at going slow!

Any ideas?
