Speedo sticking

Help required please...

My speedo needle has started to stick on the bottom and then starts working at about 20mph. i have also notice the mileage is not going up, not a bad thing [:)]

Has anyone else had this issue? Does the speedo work of a cable ? Any advice is appreciated.

Thinks it's the internal plastic gears which wear out, and about £150ish to get it repaired.

Depending on how 'retentive' your service history is I think when it is repaired the speedo could be set to what-ever mileage - so you can make up for lost miles which haven't been added now whilst its not working - sure someone more technically minded can give you some more info.

Alternatively perhaps this is an ideal excuse for a quick tour down to the south of france?

Hope that helps.

Correct, I think, Tim. Actually they don't so much wear-out as fall-apart. It's the lubricant, apparently.

I followed the instructions on http://www.odometergears.com/products/Porsche/911-993+94-98+%28Non-US%29/73 and discovered my 15-tooth cog wheel was now only a 13-tooth cog wheel.

They are very helpful and I have ordered a replacement from them - $25. They insist on using FedEx - $40.

FedEx were supposed to deliver yesterday but as so often with this company they messed it up. They now have 1 hour and 5 minutes to meet their 'customer retention' promise to me.

No idea why the speedo might be sticking - suggest you talk to them, David. It is an electrical device - not cable - at least on my Porker.

Dave, I wonder if this is the cogs as the needle is also sticking. I thought the cogs on the odo did not impact the needle.

You might find it is just an electrical problem because, years ago, I had my audio system replaced by a local company and when I picked up the car the speedo (needle and miles) were completely dead. The electric cable sends pulses from the sensor (on the abs I think) to the speedo on the dash so the audio company had damaged that cable and had to replace it.

Maybe you have an intermittent connection on that cable.

Sorry for not making myself clear, Mark. I was indeed referring to the broken cog problem with the odometer.

I have no idea why Dave's speedo might be sticking. I think your intermittent connection idea is worth following-up.

Dave - just remove the speedo, pull the plug out, wiggle the cable a bit, put the plug back in (perhaps use some contact cleaner) and replace the speedo.
