Speedo/water temp glitch.

Have just done a ten mile journey in the car and the speedo stopped working and the temp gauge needle shot into the red. After two miles or so, after going round a roundabout, both returned to normal.

Hadn't noticed the temp gauge problen before but the speedo has stopped a couple of times before but the mileometer still continues to work when the needle returns to 0mph.

Any ideas on this ?

The speedo can be sticky but normally clear themselves over 20mph or so (it's very common). I don't know about the temperature gauge, but given that both have happened at the same time (and assuming the speedo didn't clear at greater speeds) then chances are it's a connection behind the dash pod, but you'd need to check the wiring to verify this (for example the oil pressure gauge shows max when the earth is broken).

Sounds like a bad ground somewhere behind the gauges or connecting to them.

Grounding is generally the brown wires.

My speedo gave up, along with numerous other electrical gremlins. See here:

If you're searching, then you need to set the "display posts from" on the 944 main page to a longer time frame, but not so long it crashes. [][] A fix is on the way!

My speedo started working again with the couple of good runs it had. The indie's advice was that the sensor - on the gearbox? - was likely to fall apart if fiddled with, so best to leave it until it gives up completely or I have the spare cash to replace it.

Water temp, never heard of that being a problem. As you'll see from my thread, the econometer is always sticky until regular use dries it out. My oil pressure gauge is erratic, but again kicks in after a good drive.

I've decided that the wet weather of the last 2 years, in combination with my car being outside and often left for weeks without use, has led to a lot of corrosion on the electrical contacts. This year, I'll be experimenting with a revolutionary new solution....drive the flippin' thing! [&:]

I had issues with needles all over the shop on mine. I took out the pod (carefully) cleaned it down with a touch of contact cleaner... Made sure all the pins on the dash plugs were ok and tightened up all the wee nuts on the instruments. Dont go horsing these up - just nice as its easy to crack the pod itself. That problem you have sounds like an earth point loose ...... Let us know how you get on.....!

I had the speedo issue and it was the sender on the gearbox as Paul said. Being made of sterner stuff ([:D]) I removed mine and gave it a good clean with electrical cleaner and it was fine ever since. Its location means it gets a fair bit of road grime and I guess 17 years of muck killed it.

Did approx 150 miles today keeping an eye on the gauges. Temp occasionally went to the red, battery on occasions all over the place, speedo ok today. It does seem as the first thing to do is check the contacts which I will do and report back to you. Any problems taking the instruement pod out or is it straight forward ?
Thanks guys.
