Speedometer and odometer stopped working?

Hi all

So, my speedo and odometer have stopped working. Everything else in the dash looks normal, including the rev counter. So a bit of reading suggests that either the cog in my odometer has gone, or perhaps the gearbox feed to the speedo? My car is a 1986 Lux. Am I right in thinking that as mine is an oval dash model and as the rev counter works, it's more likely to be the gearbox feed? (Fingers crossed, as I don't fancy dismantling the dash!)

Cheers.

The pickup for the speedo is on the gearbox by the driveshaft flange on the left hand side. Probably first thing to check is that the connector there hasn't come adrift...

If the speedometer has stopped then as Rob has suggested I would suspect the hall effect sensor on the final drive of the transaxle. Oval dash started in 85.5 so yes you have an oval dash. You can access this with back end supported on axle stands.

Right, I managed to get under the car, and the speedo drive is still connected to the gearbox, seems firmly attached and doesn't seem to be full of green stuff. Can this connector be replaced? What's the next step?

Cheers.

Just to add to this - am I right in thinking that as the rev counter still works, the problem is not due to a broken cog in the odometer? So the gearbox feed is still the likely culprit, even though it looks OK on casual inspection?

Thanks.

The rev counter is derived from the flywheel sensors. In any case a completely different source than the speedo. Either the hall sensor at the gearbox, the gauge or any of the circuit inbetween could be at fault. I would suggest if your odometer is still working it is possibly the gauge.

Darn. Neither odometer nor speedo is working, I was hoping to narrow it down further before I start buying parts...

Thanks.
