Speedometer/ dashboard issues.

Hi I have the feeling I might have a few queries.... now that I've actually managed to get behind the wheel

The Speedo works and is quite steady but the tripmeter and the total miles meter do not function. Spookily the overall mileage is stuck with the first 3 digit reading.... 944! SCARY!
I guess the is quite involved to get the speedo out? then is it repairable if so where? if not am I trying to find one from a breaker with all the risks of it not working? BTW I know not to press the reset when running

Also the boost gauge seems to have a mind of its own and doesn't ever read more than about 1/4 full scale... ,although the boost seems ok... Maybe something to do with the Promax Boost enhancer?

Conversley the OIL pressure gauge seems to run run high

It will need a new gear inside the speedo, there is plenty of posts on how to fix it
if you have a steady hand it’s not that hard, and with the clocks out it’s a good time to clean all your electrical contacts under there

you will need the gear pair, think if you Google 944 speedo gears you should have no problem finding them,

it’s easier if you take the steering wheel off, but when you undo the nut don’t take it right off, I have seen folks break their nose or loose teeth when a steering wheel comes off in a rush
 
Yeah the gauges come out no bother and are easy to split, and remove individual ones. As Martin says good time to clean up all the connectors including the rugby ball shaped things with 2 prongs. 4 of them. Single 7mm nut holds each one.

A boost enhancer should not affect the boost gauge. You want a proper boost gauge anyway as well as an AFR gauge. I have both housed in the cubby hole beneath the stereo. Cubby removed and carbon plate with 2 cut outs for the gauges now there.

I've never had any issues with my dash oil pressure gauge so can't advise. It is electrical though. You could possibly calibrate it with the screw on the gauge, you would need a mechanical oil pressure gauge rigged up though to get it right. My voltage gauge was low and I re-calibrated it that way, using a multi-meter for reference.

Boost gauge may not be working or you may have boost leaks, probably worth plumbing in a temporary one in the meantime I have successfully wedged a 52mm one in the cubby below the stereo keeping the majority of the cubby free for other stuff, however when on boost I prefer it nearer my eye line!


I 'think' the boost level for the gauge comes from the feed to the KLR ECU so if it is reading low the ECU might not be getting accurate boost data. In a standard car 1bar on the gauge is atmospheric anything above that is boost up to 1 bar above atmospheric 14.5(ish) Psi when the gauge reads 2.

If there are bad earths on the cluster that may affect the boost gauge too.

what do the boost oil pressure read with ignition on / engine off?
( i think it should 1bar 'boost' and zero on the oil pressure but oil reads 5 if sender faulty)

Being a bit old school I assumed the oil and boost gauges were fed by pipes!. The video that I watched to see the dash removal didn't mention either undoing the pipe from the oil pressure gauge or taking off the pipe to the boost gauge.... now I know why. When I think about it I put in over £30 of fuel and the gauge was reading just over the 1/4 mark. I did think about checking these connections. the oil gauge is what I'd describe as "full scale deflection" seems having the cluster out needs to move up the priority scale.

Older cars also had a voltage regulator for the instrument feeds which when it went wrong all instruments were affected. I assume there isn't one of these on the car?

Is the oil pressure gauge sender easy to get at?

Oil pressure sender is on the side of the block below the oil filter - might be just visible through the wheel arch,

The oil pressure sender gauge is easy enough to access but not with a full size 24mm spanner. You have to cut down the spanner somewhat so you can get it in and turn it, certainly on a turbo anyway. Leave it about 4 or 5 inches long in total, needs to be open not a ring spanner.
