Speedometer failure

I know this has been discussed before and I'm sorry if I'm going over old ground, but the search facility isn't throwing up the information I'm after.

At the weekend, I took my '88 Carrera (electronic speedometer) out for a pre-MOT shakedown run and everything was going just fine until I was sitting in traffic and started to smell electrical burning. I wasn't sure where it was coming from but as I had the windows open, I assumed it wasn't from my car (risky, I know...). However, when I pulled away, the smell disappeared but the speedo wasn't working, nor were the odometer or trip meter - all had been fine when I set off from home.
The sensor was replaced ten years (20,000 miles) ago so taking the smell into account, I'm assuming it's the speedo itself but I'd like to do some simple tests before sending the gauge off for repair.
To that end, I've got a few questions and any help would be greatly appreciated:-
If the speed, odo and trip aren't working, what is most likely to be at fault?
I'm sure I read somewhere that the sensor can be tested by putting a meter across 2 wires that feed the speedo and turning a rear wheel - which wires are these?
My MOT is due in 3 weeks. I've made enquiries with the two best known speedo repairers, Speedy Cables and Reap. The first can do the job but there is an 8-10 week turn around and I've heard nothing from Reap yet, but I assume their schedule is similar. One company that has said they can repair my speedometer within a week is Autotronics in Leicester - has anybody got any experience of them? My speedometer is a very expensive component to send to an unknown company...

Any help will be much appreciated,

Thanks

Thanks Richard - I spoke to John a couple of hours ago, he's happy to replace odometer gears but doesn't touch the electronics on later speedos. In fact, he asked me who the goto companies are so he can pass the information on to other customers!
Nice chap with some goid advice though
