Speedometer problem

Like its stopped working. Its been intermittent for a year or more but recently has packed up completely. I feel the problem is not with the instrument but with the sender. Any ideas?

I'd put money on it being the sender or, more accurately, the wire to sender. The plug gets full of crap after a while - unplug the sender, clean the contacts on the sender and the plug itself with an alcohol wipe, and it'll be right as rain.

They can get a sticky needle. Mine periodicaly won't work and tapping the dash is enough to free it.

Check whether the mileometer works or not. If not then its the sender, if yes then a sticky needle. A good blast up to warp speed used to 'unstick' mine in the S2.

Thanks everyone. So wheer is the sender located? On the gerabox obviously, and accessed from below the car but general directions would help

Right next to and just above the near-side driveshaft output flange. Accesible with car jacked and wheel removed.
