My first sentence should have read "plastic odometer wheel".
I have a Bentley manual for this car and the wiring I have used has been taken from it.
Red/Black to 12v+
Brown/Red to 31B
The third multiple connector of Double Brown/single Red/Brown to the -negative terminal. There is no connection to the A terminal as there is no cruise control.
This appears to be the correct solution but the problem persists.
Be interested to see Bones wiring solution if you can find it.

I think the symptoms you describe are more likely caused by a speedo internal problem, though high and low voltages can cause some erroneous speedo readings (perhaps with swinging speedo needle) most likely due to a failed/failing voltage regulator - I had that once. Check the voltage across the battery when the engine is running (13.5 volts or so).
I'd like to know what the resolution was.
Best wishes
That was my instinct after you said the wiring was correct - possible you may have inadvertantly done smething when you replaced the odo gear?I think the symptoms you describe are more likely caused by a speedo internal problem
If you don't get a resolution, these guys may be able to help: www.speedycables.com Contact details on the site. RPM got them to refurb my speedo a couple of months ago including replacing broken odo gearing. Nice job, done without harming the seals etc. Chances are they may have seen your problem before, so maybe worth giving them a call. One thing, they don't have a reputation for being quick - RPM did a complete top and bottom rebuild plus an exhaust backdate and a few other bits on my engine in less time than the speedo refurb!
