Speedometer repair

A little while ago I was really chuffed to get hold of an MPH speedo to put into my KPH leftie and it worked fine for some 200 miles or so. Then the odometer stopped working although the speed needle continued to work fine.

From what I've read on the various forums it seems that this is not entirely uncommon with a small nylon gear wheel inside stripping some teeth. What I need now is to find someone who can repair it - and, hopfully, also replace the dented bezel. It seems that North Hollywood Speedo have a good reputation and I've asked them for some idea of cost but I'd like to avoid a transatlantic journey for the speedo if I can since I suspect the majority of the cost is going to benefit the couriers.

If anyone has any experience of this type of repair in the UK I'd very much appreciate some more information.

Regards

Dave

I don't know how similar the units are but 924s suffer the same problem and it is a DIY'able fix (albeit patience and care is required), if you are interested let me know and we can have a chat about what is involved (I am not sure I could explain it here!).

Alternatively before I repaired mine I was told that there is a chap somewhere in South Wales who repairs them, unfortunately I know little more than this since I decided to have a go myself first before researching further.

I think you need to contact Speedycables.
They used to be in Swansea but I think they moved up near London.
I've used them for repairs and recalibration and would recommend them.

Nick,

Thanks for that - that was exactly what I was after. I called them and they reckon they can fix it and they just want me to send the unit to them. They're guessing at around £80 + P&P so it may not be too bad.

Thanks again.

DON'T send that speedo Dave!

I have done this exact repair and it is relatively easy. You need to order the parts from Odometer Gears, the guy there is very helpful.

There is a thread on this on here:

http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=352340

This gives detailed instructions with pictures and everything, take your time and you won't have any problems. I took mine apart before I ordered the gears so I could see exactly how things worked.

The website for Odometer Gears which someone else has posted above has pictures aswell so you can see how it fits in to your speedo when you have it taken apart.

Just a quick update. The odometer started working again this weekend!!! I'm wondering if sitting in the sun over the Silverstone weekend had some affect on it - either good or bad. It was that weekend when it stopped working and it looks like the trip meter had registered 0.8 of a mile when we got home.

Thanks for all the suggestions above and I think I'll have a go at it myself should the problem re-occur.

It was a good weekend though!! The car won Best Watercooled at the R10 Concours!! We had a good turnout and the weather was just about acceptable with the odd shower giving us yet another opportunity to rush out with the towels and leathers!! Best Non-Porsche catagory was keenly fought (with 2 entries) but I suspect it might be more popular next year.

I think mine stopped and started for a while before it finally gave up too!

Sorry Alex - that's what I get for typing a message at 7:30 in the morning!!! I have no idea why I typed that!! I had a funny feeling that I might have when I typed something similar in another e-mail and almost made the same mistake but I didn't bother going back to check. I obviously should have done. Obviously it should have been Best Air-cooled. Sorry!!!

Ha ha, I see - I had wondered whether there had been some bizarre combination of classes!
