Spherical Bearing Top Mounts

A few weeks ago I had the misfortune of driving WUF. I say misfortune only because such comparisons immediately induce additional expenditure on Beaky. Mr Cannell is a naughty person and obviously in league with the Devil or my bank manager or both (they could be one and the same of course).

Any road up, I was very impressed with how taut and precises WUF's steering was. This made Beaky seem even more floppy and in need of further upgrades.

On smurfing the net I discovered some spherical bearing top mounts at a very reasonable price. I had looked into replacing Beakys top mounts with OEM's previously, but at £500 a side that idea quickly evaporated. Discussing my findings with Rick he suggested talking to Simon at ESS as Rick thought he had my American web finding available in stock. He did and same were collected at Brands Hatch.

The new mounts were fitted yesterday and after a short, but unchallenging, run I am very pleased with what was a pretty cheap upgrade. There is, as you would expect, a slight increase in vibration from the road surface but this is more than offset by the increase in feel. It sounds silly but there appears to be a reduction in latency in the steering (not that a 944 is like a Land Rover [;)]), the steering seems to respond with more directness rather than a feeling of taking up the slack.

All these elements are very subtle and I wouldn't want you to think that this one change has bestowed Beaky with Go Kart handling, but it all helps to improve the package - at a reasonable cost in this instance.

As I understand, Sidestream has also carried out this upgrade and he is far more sensible than me.

Glad to hear of further worthwhile improvements to Beaky. Does this upgrade also need a geometry check/adjustment?

In an ideal world a geometry check would perhaps be worthwhile, but, as the original and new mountings should locate the top of the strut central to the tower I don't think it is a necessity.

Beaky does need a geometry check as I seem to be getting uneven wear from one side to the other and more pronounced wear on the outside of the tyre. I would like to run more negative camber which should improve this.

I can concur - as I have rose jointed top mounts also. I also have poly bushes, one of which has chosen this morning to disintegrate. That I can confirm if not a good thing.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I do however have to say a big thanks to John for devaluing the OEM top mounts I have in my garage to sell by highlighting an aftermarket and upgraded alternative for way less money [8|][FONT=verdana,geneva"]

Ahh![&o] Uhm [&o] But [8|] I have pointed out how spectacularly expensive new OEM top mounts are and, for those that don't want the harshness of spherical bearings[&:], I have no doubt your top mounts would be the very best option they could get. [:)]
