Spline drive size for cv shaft

Can anyone remember what size this is for a 1984 944 thanks.
And how do I get them out if I've mangled them with my T40 torx....?

Also used to be included in Teng socket sets above a certain size, which is how I got mine (18th birthday present!)

If you are considering this job then it is WELL worth cleaning the bolts before getting the tool anywhere near them. A squirt with some WD40 and a wipe with a rag will do. Getting all the crud out of the head is the aim, as this will prevent you from pushing the tool all the way home, and make it more likely to round off.

If you do round it off, you are into a whole new sphere of grief and nastiness. Don't go there. (You can just about cut slots, or flats, or drill the head off, but either way there are tears before bedtime.)

Oli.

This is going to sound drastic, but I have removed many a rounded torx (and similar) by selecting a slightly larger torx bit than required, fitting it to a sacraficial extension bar and hammering it on to the bolt head. The torx bits seem to come out almost unscathed, but I can't say the same for the extension. You will need to hammer it until it bottoms out completely inside the bolt head or it will probably strip ahead. It doesn't even need to be dead straight, but it helps. I would strongly recommend using only a single torx bit as they are strongest. Hope this helps.

They all came out with the 8mm 12 point spline set I bought at Halfords. Apart from a couple of dumb errors (trying to get the back bearing out before removing the circlip and putting it back together and then finding I'd forgot to put a spacer back in) it seems a reasonable job on the '84 model with no press required. Mind you, I haven't had time to test drive it yet so I'm not counting my chickens yet. Could have done with circlip pliers for this job.
Thanks for all your help.
PS does anyone know why they went from this type of bearing to the press bearing on the aluminium arms from, what, '86-on?

Test drive was fine, thrumming sound has disappeared. Bit surprised I managed to diagnose and sort this in a oner; usually there are several stabs at getting to the problem :)
