Split in plastic rear window

Not a happy bunny. Picked up my first ever Porsche 2 weeks ago. It is a 4yr old Boxster S with only 27K. It was a private sale but has a 12mnth Porsche warranty. Have fallen in love with the car. What a head turner and handles superbly. Unfortunately after owning it only 5 days I managed to put a 3 inch vertical split in the back screen. The hood is otherwise in mint condition. I think it split when I put it down one afternoon. Weather was good and it was not cold. Spoke to local Porsche dealer thinking it would be covered on warranty but told it is wear and tear. It could cost up to 2K to replace the roof.

Need to know if there a viable alternative to replacing the roof. I have spoken to several local trimmers and all are unwilling to remove hood to replace back panel.

Any help would be really appreciated.

There seems to be a lot of rear screens splitting

Just had an email from a place called Autoretrim in Stockport. Prices seem to be better than anything I have seen so far.
Prices as requested

1. replace plastic panel. £ 180
2. Replace hood. Black mohair. Not fiited. £ 630
3. Replace hood. Black mohair. Fitted. £ 750

Will give the replacement panel a go.

Will update on how well it went.

Exactly the same thing happened to mine, and I still havent replaced it yet. I would be very interested to hear how yours goes. Good luck!

Had the panel replaced just before xmas.
It took a full day as the hood had to come off.
The restitching looks good.
Unfortunately when dropping the hood I have to stop half way and manually ensure that the panel folds properly before carrying on.
Not sure if this is due to the panel not being tight enough.
The guy uses a work shop at the back of his house.
Not exactly OPC service but I suppose you get what you pay for.
If I had to do it again I would probably go for the hood replacement.
But for £180 it was money well spent.

That's the infamous 'chop' - not doing it is why most plastic screens go in the first place.

JCB..

As John said - this is known as the "chop".
We ALL have to do it, EVERY time we lower the top (in this counry at least - I did not have to do it once in Italy, and once in France, when the weather was REALLY hot!) Porsche Salesman tell you about it when you buy from them - I would have thought the private owner would have done as well[]

The replacement window is probably fitted fine!
