sporadic engine starting problem

Lately, after the car has been standing for 1-2 hours, it now and then has difficulty igniting. It seems about to start up, but then dies out. After about 10 tries, it ignites. I always have a spare DME relais, so I put in a new one. The problem went away for about a month or so, and now started again. Someone told me it could be the NTC 2 temperature sensor which is not measuring the correct engine temperature, causing the DME relais to react incorrectly. Anybody ever experience similar problems? Thanks, Phil

Yes, I've had exactly this problem (and I remember past discussion - others have too). I'm sure it's a temperature thing (engine temperature) - because I have problem if I start, drive for 5 miles (ie not yet warmed up), stop for 10 mins and try to restart. Seems to happen when engine is asked to start at a particular temperature. It does restart if you try for long enough (and don't press the accelerator - just let the car work out for itself what the problem is and she will then fire).

Don't know the cause - but I have got used to it!

Hi Mark, it is an irksome problem. Am going to my mechanic today. Pretty sure it is the cylinder head temp sensor I mentioned. They should be able to check it out with a voltmeter. Will report..

OK, replaced DME. Seems to work again for the time being. Wait and see, I guess.

With your old one (swapped back from first posting above) or a brand new one?

Might be just unplugging and re-plugging solves it (resets something perhaps).

The problem came up again. My mechanic came over right away, and conducted some measurements, determining that the temperature sensor showed 39 degrees C, instead of 10 degrees C, so that the gas mixture was too poor to start the car. He disconnected the sensor, and I can start the car OK for a couple of days until the part arrives...
