Sport exhaust

I think my exhaust is close to being needed to be changed. I am thinking of getting a sports / stainless system but know nothing about them. I have seen prices from £150 to £400ish.

Anyone able to give me any advice on what to get and where to get it from.

Thanks

Hi Jez,

If you are talking about the rear section, you have a few options. There is the Janspeed version (either large oval or dual pipe silencer tips), the Dansk (cheapest) and OEM from Porsche. There are other alternatives too from Lindsey, FabSpeed and ***MAX ******sport.

All depends on what you want to achive and whether you have a CAT and / or plan on other mods in the future.

Get in touch via private mail for more specific details as the moderators may delete any response from me that is deemed commercial. Thanks.

Jez I have the standard Dansk stainless steel back box on both my S2 and Turbo and am very pleased with them. Mine came from Bert at Berlyn Services a few years ago, back then they were £140 for the Turbo and IIRC £160 for the S2

There is also a Dansk sports version, but I have no experience of them.

I have the Janspeed system previously mentioned (twin pipe variety) bought from Essential Styling and am very happy with it. Is a nice bit of kit but one of the pricier I think.

Have a look on the Fabspeed motorsport website, they have videos involving large items of fruit and tennis balls,it is a very entertaining sales-pitch for a 944 turbo stainless exhaust, they are very shiny also- that was enough for me![:D]

The one your car came with was stainless steel, so there needn't be a difference in sound unless the design changes.

Just wonder what are the differences between them e.g. standard OEM, cheap Dansk, Essential or custom made?

Do you get more bhp (and noise) out of the more expensive one or just mainly for the look ???

I doubt price has much to do with noise, though I know of 2 cases (both on non-turbo cars interestingly) of the fibres coming out of the Janspeed one sold by ESS making it noisy over time.

Another option is Hayward and Scott. They will build you one with the volume you request if it matters to you, whether that be loud or exceptionally quiet.

Can someone please explain the differences ....
Do you tend to get more bhp, noise, better quality out of the custom made one Or they are more less the same?

Regards
Charles

You could go down to Powerflow and have a "custom" system made to sound and look like whatever you fancy, but I expect you'd lose power.

A custom system is a dangerous thing because it's probably easier to get less from the car than from the system Porsche spent vast sums of money developing. Where you can gain is if you are willing to move the compromise Porsche had to strike toward allowing more noise, more emissions etc.

In general a better performing exhaust will be louder, but simply replacing the entire system with a huge drainpipe would not make the car go its best; you need to get the restriction optimised, not remove it entirely. I think Porsche had to add more than ideal restriction to meet noise and emissions requirements hence removing some boxes (be they cat or silencer) helps. I'd be more cautious completely throwing the Porsche system away and starting again however.

Someone who knows the cars and understands exhausts could possibly make a custom system that would improve performance, but to be honest it's going to be a bit hit or miss. Better in my view to get one that's been developed in conjunction with a dyno test programme.

Does the dansk SSteel version sound any different or is it just a direct replacement?

The standard Dansk is a direct replacement. I find it to be just as noisy, and make no perceived performance difference. The quality however is fantastic and I am hopeful it will out live the car, another bonus is it was literally half the weight of the standard Porsche one it replaced.
