Sport seats = backache

All,

Having owned my 1994 C2 coupe for a month now I am thoroughly enjoying it in all respects bar one - it is giving me dreadful backache. The car has the original "soft backed" "sports" seats, effectively just adding pronounced side bolsters, and removing adjustable lumbar support. The problem seems to be that my upper back is relatively broad, and is preventing my lower back from getting any support in the lumbar region due to the prominence of the side bolsters - this might have been overcome if the seat retained adjustable lumbar support.

Has anone else experienced this problem, and managed to overcome it? I wonder whether an upholsterer might be able to insert a lumbar bolster and then re-cover the seat? Failing that I guess an aftermarket fitment is the only option, perhaps a later Porsche item with better adjustablilty? - I suspect the latter might run rather expensive...

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Try a bit of padding behind your lumbar before you commit. Also ensure all of your legs from bum to knee are supported by the seat. And don't drive for more than an hour or two without a break!!

I've had lower back probs for years (motorbike tumbles and farm accident...) and a subtle change in seat or driving position can often make all the difference.

Why not try Southbound. They are real specialists, and may be able to fit some corrective cushions/whetever to the existing seats.
I read an article in 911 and porsche world that they did this for somebody, so worth considering.

Thanks for the advice.

I have not heard of Southbound before. I have tried the seat in a range of configurations, and I think some adjustment to the lower back support will be necessary. This sounds much cheaper than the new chair option too!

They're good people, and if you go "while you wait" you can explore the joys of Stockbridge (bizarrely there's a florist that also do fabulous tea and cakes!! They were very puzzled why we spent most of the day in there)

Mike that's most useful. The location is quite incredible - I worked in Stockbridge for 5 years without once hearing of Southbound, and now keep my car just 10 miles from there! Perfect.

Jonathan,

I have seperate foam inserts that can be put behind the velcro'd sections of my sports seats - are these just not there?

You should be able to get replacements or custom make some for yourself.
