Sport switchable exhaust

Apologies for my ignorance in advance, however I am confused. I am in the process of purchasing a 2004 911 4s and it has a 'sport switchable exhaust' What is this?

Graham

It is a sports exhaust, which has a switch on the dashboard to make it 'quiet' or 'loud'. This item could either be factory fitted, or at not an insignificant cost have been retrofitted. Porsche however do not claim it to offer any performance gains.
For many, it is a very desirable option.

The PSE (Porsche Sports Exhaust) is an exhaust system, which when put into 'Sport' mode makes the car considerably louder than standard Carrera models.

I think all C4Ss have the PSE factory fitted as standard, do they not?

IMO the PSE for the 996 is the best sports exhaust Porsche have ever done, and really transforms the quality and character of the 996. Should have been OE.

Excellent mod - I had mine retrofitted at my OPC 18 months ago and it certainly turns heads when its switched on!!
Good for waking up the neighbours too [:D][:D][:D]

i have a 2004 c4s cab, and it does not have a switchable exhaust []. However it goes in tomorrow to have one retrofitted [:D]

Confirm not a standard item on the C4S Paul but very desirable on any 996

On my last 2 cars I've had PSE retro fitted, first by OPC and the second time by Strasse in Leeds.

The Strasse set up whilst fully switchable was installed without the cutout between 15 and 30mph and much better than the factory set up.

Thanks very much Guys, that's explained things. I'll be picking up my first Porsche next week, a 2004 9114s soft top (silver with blue hood and blue leather) with every extra imaginable, 27k on the clock, £34k. Hope ive done the right thing!

I agree that the cut out does spoil the sound and thats why I went onto the Renntech site that has an excellent section on how to disable this function. Takes about 30 mins to do and is quite a simple operation.

You've definitely done the right thing - I paid that for a Dec 02 coupe only last August... therein lies a credit crunch depreciaiton story! Enjoy, you'll love it and as for the exhaust, see my signature ;-)

Quite a simple job, Peter ??? ... but I thought you previously said ...

I did the Renntech 'mod' as Richard suggested - and getting the cover off was not very easy, but then again I suppose its not meant to be as its sealed!!

I thought that was the hard bit BUT - as I gently lifted the diode off the board the dam thing snapped in half!!! Sod law that it would happen to me!

Normally this wouldn't matter as the diode removal means that the none cut out mode is there all the time - but I wanted to be able to switch it back to 'normal'.

As I understand it this is just a signal path from the speedo and I replaced it with a standard 1N4148 diode. I fitted a switch on the outside of the box so that I can set it back to default mode, so hopefully when I test it all will be well.

Even the simplest of jobs sometimes turn into a nightmare eh!!!

I have a 2003 C4S with PSE and, trust me, you will enjoy it. I know it's childish but anytime I'm in a tunnel or close to buildings, I open the windows and sunroof to savour that fab noise but I guess onlookers just think I'm a tosser!
