Sports Chrono Option

In finalising the spec on my facelift Boxster the Sports Chrono option intrigues me.
The dealer seems to think I am a bit crazy, but it seems to be it's more than just a track day lap timer with sharpened throttle response.

For example it has a journey timer that runs for up to 12 hrs and has an intermediate stop feature for halts. You could use it to time certain road sections as well as 0 to whatever speed timer.

I see most of the 911 Gen 2 boys go for it, that can't just be because they have larger pockets?

I am wondering what owners with this option think of it and whether they think its worth the extra £520 spent, or not, as the case may be.

Chris

If you think it's worth it - then go for it...
You seem to have found things in it's functions that you feel valuable, so if the price point is not too bad why not spec it?

I would go for it. You'll kick yourself if you don't.
Not sure about Boxter, but on 911's you get some extra software options - on turbo you get an extra 50 lbs.ft. of torque!

Clive

I see on the Boxster you can spec Sport Chrono or Sport Chrono plus for the same price £520- is that right? If so I'd go for the plus and it's certainly more than worth it on the Gen 2, especially given the price of some of the other options! As I've said elsewhere the timer is a bit pointless but the other stuff you get is worthwhile IMO.

There's a thread from today regarding a magazine review of the new Caymen, where PDK, PASM and Sport Chrono Plus/Launch Control are also options. When you consider (the Porsche specs) that Sport Chrono Plus in combination with PDK can shave 0.2sec off the 0-62mph time, it does make sense for speed freaks - and track day types.

The consensus seems positive and relative to other options not that bad a price. I would certanly use it for timing trips and the throttle response sounds worth trying.
The Plus you only get these extra features if you go for PCM and at 2k I'm not into "lets see if the Sat/Nav choses the same route I know already"- been there.
I'll let you know after the weekend when I hope to try a car with Chrono.
Thanks everyone.
Chris

Got it on my 987S and would definitely spec it again, though only for the throttle response - I never use the stop watch. Handy hint - if you get pulled by "the boys in blue", zero the stopwatch before they walk up to your car!!

Chrono and Chrono Plus are the same price, but you need to spec (I think?) PASM with the Plus, which ain't cheap.

David,
Care to elaborate on throttle response, the brochure implies it uses a more agrressive map, do you find it has more top end or what?
I have PASM and ordered Sports Chrono now. The Plus features only show on the display with PCM.
Chris

The more aggressive throttle map merely implies it takes 20-50% less movement of your foot for the same amount of fuel to be sprayed into the engine :) I think 20% is the official figure, but when you drive with it, it sometimes seems more [:D]

In other words, when you twitch your foot, the car responds. This is fantastic for when you want to heel and toe and generally have the car be responsive. Not so fantastic when you are driving in town and hit a speed bump which makes your foot flex slightly and you shoot forward, or God forbid, you sneeze and slam into the car in front of you [&:]

I would definitely order it again however - purely for those times you want to push on a little [:)]

hth,
Graeme
