SPORTS CHRONO

Bit of advice needed- Having been on a Porsche weekend and used a c4s with sports chrone i was thinking of adding it to my 997s although i couldnt notice any difference when i had it turned on or off. Does it really make any difference or is it so minimal thats why i didnt notice the differnc? Also , any idea of the likely cost of having it fitted??

I had Sport Chrono on my first 997 and then on my first Cayman S. I did not spec it for the second Cayman S, nor my Gen 2 997. Its major function is for recording lap times on a track day. For that it is rubbish as it is not user friendly. Yes on a Gen 2, it will give you launch control with PDK. However, my chap at Silverstone told me I would only use it once!

Thanks Derek, so there really is no point in having it on my Gen 1 997s is what u are saying? The C4S i drove was stunning but i really couldnt notice a difference when the Sports Chrono was turned on. I read on the Porcsche forum on PH that people raved about it on the Gen1 but it didnt work for me seemingly.

Not certain but I didn't think that it could be retro-fitted - or that may just be for the turbo model.

I thought the Sports Chrono pack on the Gen 1 did several things when you hit the Sport button. Firstly changes the throttle response, secondly lowers dampers by 10mm/firmer suspension (with PASM which I think was standard on the S) and, if you have PSE, brings on the soundtrack. The clock on the dash and timing function seemed secondary and for me irrelevant. Have no idea if it can be retro fitted though and if so I bet it's expensive! I could always tell when it was on or off though[:D]

My Cayman has it and it does give sharper throttle response although can be a bit jerky, it is something I do use if pressing on, maybe you notice it less in the 997?

I had it on a 987s and it sharpened the throttle response up and made heel toeing even easier. You dont need the stop watch as it is a waste of time.

Sports chrono gives you a harder hitting throttle reponse by utilising an alternative ecu map - it doesn't give you more power per se, just more power per millimetre of throttle travel up to a point. On gen 1 cars it did select sport mode in on pasm suspension (too hard to uk road surfaces anyway) and the full soundtrack if you had pse fitted.

Why was that, Derek?

Well you will have to ask him that [:D]. However, unless you are the sort of person who likes to drag race at traffic lights, what is the point of a great 0 - 30 mph time? Surely 50 - 70 is more relevant. Incidently, my 50 - 70 PDK times are fantastic.

Ah, but the launch has a great grin factor![:D] I agree that the traffic lights in a 30mph limit is probably not the best place to demonstrate though[:(] But back to the thread, I feel that the Sports Chrono pack with more responsive throttle, optional hard ride and PSE was worth having on the Gen 1. The 3 modes, normal, sport and sport+ are even better on the Gen 2.

I would be surprised if you can have this retro-fitted:
Porsche are unable to accommodate Sport Chrono without the mantlepiece clock - if this is not there there is no hole in the dashboard to take it and from my enquiries about removing the clock at OPC the clock is intrinsic to the overall package working!

Further to above replies Sport Chrono also provides a limited level of key memory personalisation with PCM.

I see the laptimer as a secondary function. I notice a big difference with Sport on, the car feels much sharper albeit a little jerky. Perfect for a sporty drive.

On a new car, it's such a low cost option I don't understand why you wouldn't spec it.

Thanks for your points of view. I may call OPC and see what the likely cost wud be ti have it fitted if its atall possible anyway. PSE i had fitted recently and i absolutely love it although the soundtrack on a later than mine GEN 1 997 is better. OPC Colchester explained that the PSE had moved on since the first ones were fitted.
