Sports Exhaust - slight clattery sound when cold

Hi all - this is my first post on the 997 forum since graduating from my 996 just over a week ago. I've seen a number of posts about the relative merits of the various 911 models. I'm on my 4th now and I have to say that my experience so far is that finally I am driving the 911 I always wanted (although in a perfect world with more cash and storage space I would gladly have my old 993 back as well frankly).
Anyway, the reason for this post is to mention that I am noticing when I start the car up that my exhaust sounds a little clackety. It very soon goes away when the car warms up though. Is this normal?

what you find with the 997 sports exhaust is either the valve's on them clatter or the insides of the silencer fall apart causing noise
 
In my experience they are a bit noisier until they warm up. I do not think it is anything to worry about.

Thanks Terry. That's a little more reassuring. I was hoping the fact it goes away after a few minutes means it isn't too serious.
 
Although a differnet engine to yours Ellis, I have to say mine makes a right noise when starting up from cold! not a noise I dislike in any way but it does settle down once a bit warmer [:)]

I have noticed this also whe cold and I believe it just something you put up with.
Must say nice collection of previous cars......
 
I have a 987 boxster with the PSE fitted. As described above the valves have a tendency to clatter in the closed position often just after start up. Looking under the rear of the car I found that pushing the pivot pin on the flap back into the silencer removed the clatter. I think the issue is that the flap on the pivot pin can drop and fret against the inner bore of the bypass pipe, thus causing the noise. The only way I can think of solving this problem would be to fit a small spring or wave washer on the top side of the exhaust pivot pin to hold the flap more central in the pipe.A brief tap with a pin punch often solves the problem for a few weeks or actuating the PSE on an off. I did get some benefits from smearing a dollop of hi temp silicone grease on the pivot pin which finds its way into the mechanism and gives some relief for a time.
