sports exhaust sound at no cost

Cant believe it. Took the car on the toll road as i havent give it a good fast run for some time. Got home to a blowing exhaust. I now has a porsche which sounds like it has a sports exhaust or even louder. Didnt cost me a penny, Ha Ha ! However, im assuming i will need to replace the silencer boxes. Im assuming you replace both sides at the same time, car has done 93k.
Can anyone forward the details, ie is this an easy job and where would you recommend to purchase new boxes (3.4 C2). Is this a job that can be done easily or is it one of those best left with a professional? Thinking of rusty nuts/studs etc
On a second point ive also found my windscreen washer bottle is not holding water. My suspicion is that the frost has probably created a crack as it gushes out the bottom of the car as quick as i fill it. Does anyone have an instruction sheet on how to remove and again, the name of a recommended supplier.

Like you say, it is the rusty clamps which are the worst part of the job. Best to get a new set, and cut the old ones off - which is easier said than done. It is fairly easy to get the boxes off, by removing the rear wheel and taking them out through the wheel arch. The washer tank is inside the front nearside wheel arch. You have to remove the arch liner to get it out, but it is reasonably easy to do. It could also be that the filler neck has split, or come out of the grommet where it goes in the tank. Replaced mine recently,2000 C4,90,000 miles so similar to yours.The removal should have been easy,three nuts hold the silencer bracket or two bolts hold the silencer to the bracket,everything was bloody solid,mustn't have coppaslip in Germany.Anyway got them off with heat,drilling,cigs and swearing and I would suggest if you are not handy with spanners get them fitted by someone but try and get a fixed price and not an hourly rate.If you are handy, get your hand round the back of the brackets and feel for corrosion on the nuts,those on mine were so far gone there was nothing left to get a spanner on,that's where my problems started,other than that it would be easy.
 
Can you not just disk the boltheads down to the clamp and tap them through the hole then? Im guessing its not an easily diy job if you used a specialist.
 
just done some further investigation on the exhaust issue. Boxes and cats are all ok. It seems as though the flange joining the cat pipe and the silencer has come apart slightly. I suppose therefore all that needs doing is replacing the three bolts. However; 1. none of these bolts have nuts on them...is this right? 2. if i were to get a saw and run it up through the gap in the flange would i damage anything? 3. none of the bolts have any heads on them 4. whilst bolts are loose in the silencer section, they are completely seized in the cat section Took it to kwik fit but they dont seem keen to do the job. Any suggestions thanks
 
Careful. They aren't nuts and bolts holding the two flanges together. The flange on the cat pipe has studs, and the nuts go on the manifold side. The nuts may have come off, but might also have evaporated by years of heat and damp. Are they in place on the other side? It sounds like you need to get the threads on the studs cleaned up with a die nut, and then new gasket and nuts.
 
ahh! many thanks richard. That makes so much sense. I wonder if i can get away with cutting the threads with the die without removing the the silencers using plenty of grease. The other side has no nuts either. If successful on one side i may repeat on other side. Can i assume these are M8 ? As i am going to try to do this without removing the silencer and hence the steel gasket, which i think can be used more than once, would you recommend using some gasket seal or does this diminish the use of the steel gasket and is best not used. I would certainly try recutting the threads and just fit new nuts. If it seals when you do them up (and I think it likely it will) then it will save a lot of trouble. Personally, I wouldn't use a sealer. It is an M8 thread, and I'm 99% sure it will be standard 1.25mm pitch.
 
Many thanks richard. Couldnt get the die on the thread, however the new nuts did eventually cut their way through. Job done. Just one other question, when stopping, the car often increases its revs from around 750 to 1000 and then immediately comes back down again. It sometimes does this once or twice most times when i stop, but not every time. Any thoughts. It has just been serviced and had 4 new coils. Im now feeding the car the higher octane petrol as in the past it had normal octane. many thanks again for your support, David E
