Sports exhaust sound

To-day had a sports exhaust fitted by my local OPC to my 981 Cayman.
I have only driven it approx 5 miles home but didn't notice any change in sound when the button was pressed, the led illuminates but no noticeable difference in sound.
Is the change in sound only apparent at higher revs or have the OPC failed to programme it correctly ?

Keith

On a lot of models, the sports exhaust won't activate at speeds between 25 and 37mph due to noise regulations in urban areas. If you only live 5 miles from the OPC, I'm guessing most of your drive home would have been at that speed range.

you can hear the flaps open and a deeper noise if you open the door and just sit on your drive pressing the button.

As Mr D says but also you will find that when you open it up above 4,000rpm you will notice the difference.

Thank you all.

I did drive it a bit more spiritedly this morning and there was a certain amount of popping on the overrun but the difference between it being on and off wasn't as marked as I'd expected. I've never previously driven a car with it fitted but did follow cars at the Silverstone Classic who had it fitted which convinced me I needed it :) I'll listen out for the flaps opening as Mr D suggests tomorrow.

The OPC did tell me that the noise improves after a few thousand miles so I'll just have to do a few more runs through mid Wales.

I have it on my 987 and can say it is subtle but noticeable. Other marques' sports exhausts are much more obvious but I will say it is a pleasant addition. I drive with mine on whenever I don't have a passenger.

I was dead keen to have the PSE fitted to my 2010 Boxster S but after reading this it goes against every other thread I have read, I think I need to hear one close up!

The other option if you want more noise is the Carnewal route. They take your current exhaust in and modify it. I bought a slightly used (27000m) for my Boxster S but ended up getting the Cayman before doing the exhaust upgrade. If you want to buy the exhaust to go down the Carnewal route, let me know. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2lwIG4GDoVQ

I did try, as Mr D suggested, listening with the car door open to the sound as the button is pressed. There is a mechanical noise (presumably the flaps opening) and a very small change to a lower pitched exhaust note.

I had hoped that the 'off' position would produce the sound of a standard exhaust whilst switching in 'on' would produce a louder sound with pops etc, it seems that it is always loud which may not be a good thing on long journeys.

Given the considerable cost I'm not convinced I've spent my money wisely.........unless it gets better with time of course.

This is my normal, Sport is very loud.

At the price charged for an OEM sports exhaust, you can probably get better noise from 200 cell cat manifolds as I've fitted if you're not fussed about warranty..

I bought my present car with the PSE fitted from new and of course have no idea how much the previous owner used it but at first it didn't seem so pronounced when on, that has changed over the past year and it is now quite noticeable. Maybe the flaps weren't operating properly as I found the cable clips had corroded away where they secure the cables to the underbody or maybe it is that the system works better both on flaps and on some carbon coating parts of the exhaust if given some use in both settings rather than just keeping it as one setting. I'm unsure if others have noticed but when mine first fires up it is louder then quietens until I select the PSE on.

The PSE was a must have option on the car (will I ever grow up [:D])

More smiles per mile than any other option IMO.
