Sports Exhaust - Sport Chrono

My MY06 C2S is fitted with a sports exhaust and sport chrono. I expected that the exhaust would have a separate button but is in fact connected to the chrono sport button. In other words if you want the sports exhaust on you have to press the chrono sport button so you have enhanced throttle response and patially surpresed PSM. There are times when you would like a sports sound but normal throttle response and full PSM. Last weekend I hit some black ice on a roundabout whilst in sport mode and was sideways for longer than I would have liked. Full PSM would have been a help I am sure. The sound of the exhaust is addictive especially under hard accelearation so I would like greater flexibility in its use i.e. Sport sound but full PSM for wet or icy days on the road

I am thinking about asking my OPC to fit a separate button for the exhaust or to wire it such that it is always on. Has anyone else come across this problem and if so any ideas on what can be done?

Hi Bob, I know that you can do both of your options - either always on or a separate button. I didn't realise with the 997 you have to have the Sports mode on, like you say I can't imagine that's much fun in the winter ! Ring your OPC service manager and get a price, then try another OPC to compare !

Good luck, let me know how you get on.

Rob,

I took your advice and visted my OPC today. The sports exhaust is controlled by an air pressure switch which is immediately under the engine lid and easy to access. I was given three choices:

1. Disconnect the switch so the sports exhaust is on all the time. Apparently this does no harm to the car. Under normal use the sports exhaiust is designed to cut out betwen 30 and 40MPH apparently as part of some agreement with the European bureaurcrats. This option would mean the sports exhaust is on all all the time unless you reconnect the original switch which takes just a few seconds but obviously cant be done from within the car.

2. Fit a switch just under the engine lid which would take 1 hour plus parts and VAT. They have done this for one 997 customer who was worried about noise on track days but also wanted to use the facilities on the sport chrono.

3. Fit a switch in the car on the dashboard which would take 4 hours plus part plus VAT. The reason this would take so long is to do the job properly quite a few internal linings have to be removed in order to feed the cable through the car and make a neat job.

My OPC was being very helpful. For now I have gone for option 1. and I will see how I get on

so what happens if you've gone for sports exhaust but no sports chrono??? (as I have done - car doesn't arrive till next year)

Good question. My OPC said there would be a separate button in that case. The demonstrator I drove earlier this year had sports exhaust but no Sport Chrono and it had a separate button for the exhaust. However as my set up was different to expected you may like to check with your OPC

Yup, Cam (??), I can confirm. My 997S MY06 has a sports exhaust and no chrono thingy and there's a neat rocker switch below the PCM to switch the sound on/off. When the car is started, the exhausse is normal, i.e. quiet(ish) and a light on the rocker shows. When the rocker is pressed, the light goes out and all hell breaks loose (well almost). I was talked into the sports exhaust option (not by my wife) and I'm delighted.

I agree sports exhaust sounds great. I think Porsche should fit a separate exhaust switch regardless of whether you have a sport chrono or not. At the moment I am running with sports exhaust on all the time and not finding it a problem but I would prefer to have the switch so as you have the flexibility to go into "quiet mode". I will take this up with Porsche but doubt I will get anywhere.

My C2S cab arrives in March 06 with sports exhaust and sport chrono, i will contact dealer to see if switch can be fitted at factory. I do not want the problem of having to be in sport mode to get the better exhaust note! You would think they would do this at no additional cost! Thanks for bringing this up it must be a common problem.

PS does the switch look out of place or does it look like it was always meant to be there "if you know what i mean"?

Regards

Roger

Robert Poole probably best guy to answer your question on visibility of switch. On the test car I drove it was fine and looked like it should be there. Sports exhaust sounds great in my view but if you can get factory to fit separate switch and not to sport chrono button then this will be ideal set up giving you max flexibility on how you use the car . I am not sure how flexible factory will be but dealer may be able to help

Spoke to the dealer who confirmed that Exhaust will only work when sport mode is switched on, they also confirmed that if you don't have sport chrono you would have a nice seperate switch. I have asked them to speak to Porsche to see if anything can be done! I have suggested the switch does not need to be on display it could be hidden just as long it is easily accessible from the drivers seat. They ae looking into it !!!

You could argue that you would get more use from the sports exhaust than sport chrono, In fact do you really need sport chrono unless your doing trackdays etc? It maybe worth dropping the sport chrono to have a sports exhaust that you can switch on / off.

I would bet that not many owners who spec'd exhaust with sport chrono appreciated the problem, I know I didn't until I saw it on the forum. I will let you know how I get on in due course.

Roger

I wonder if the same problem exsits for cars that have the -20mm suspension insted of the PASM? Because I assume that when you ht the sports buttun on the PASM car if firms up the suspension, this is not the case with the -20mm car.

Robert, like you, my C4S due in March has the Sports Exhaust but NOT Sports Chrono, so I'll get the button on the dash, the same as on the C4S I test drove.

My wife thinks that the Porsche Sports Exhaust is a 'waste of £1,200', just to hear a 'broom, broom' noise........

Sidicks,

I think she may change her mind when you start the car up and get admiring glances from all in earshot...... Think of it as oneupmanship over an iPod.

Good luck,

Her response is always 'as long as I can borrow the car, you can spend what you like....'[8|]

PSE and Sport Chrono were some of the things I asked about when I was looking at the 4S yesterday, the non Chrono cars fitted with PSE have this button instead of the "Sport" chrono switch.

I have to say I'd like the exhaust but still like to have the option of when I switch the chrono on or off, hopefully Porsche can make some sort of modification.

I have posted a new item ref sports exhaust etc,

In brief should I omit sport chrono so that I can have a seperate switch for the exhaust system. I don't plan to do any trackdays!
