Sports Exhaust switch inoperable

OK so I did a search for sports exhaust and exhaust (forum specific for the 996) and no records found!

A while back I remember readings someones post regarding the failure of the sports exhaust switch which turned out to be a corroded or stuck something or other on the exhaust system. The fix was relatively easy and cheap I seem to recall so thought I'd track it down.

I'm toying with selling my 4S and my exhaust doesn't switch to the non sports exhaust note when I use the switch. Not that I have ever needed it you understand but I figured that all should work for when I do sell.

Anyone got the foggest idea of what I'm talking about?

Hi Arbee,

I was enquirying last year when I bought my car.

The switch was not working.

In my case it turned out to be the Vacuum unit which pushes the valve in and out.

The value was £60 (i think). The old one had snapped and was badly rusted.

I also removed the speed sensitive wire from the relay for the exhaust. This was I can choose the either have the exhaust on all the time or not.

Ron - is it just one side, or both?

As Tiku says, it could be one actuator. I think it might have been Peter Bull's post some while ago that you remember, as he had the same problem with a rusted actuator.

If it is both sides, first thing is to check all the vacuum pipes, and that the relay clicks when you switch it on and off.

Edit:

Here are Peter's threads:

Thank you chaps,

Yes Richard now you mention it, it was Peter's report and thanks for taking the time to dig out the threads for me. Embarrassingly I had posted a couple of posts back then as I knew there was an issue but I haven't got around to doing anything about it "" where does the time go??

Oops, Sorry Richard,

To answer your question I'm not sure yet. All I have done is press the switch and heard no change in the burble form the exhaust. Oh and one other favour - what number is the relay? I might need to dig out my soldering iron, should the next lucky incumbent want the speed defined operation returned to standard.
