Sports Exhaust

I have recently fitted an induction kit to my car and now would like to take car of the exhaust side of things. Any advice?

Hayward & Scott do a nice, complete stainless system. A bit dear, maybe, but they can tailor the sound.

Just because I have one fitted does not make me biased !

Actually, mine is the quietist (sic) that they could produce, but still makes a nice,
deep-throated sound.

Performance - +10/15 bhp normally aspirated, +15/25 forced induction (they say).

Are you going for a whole system??

I just have the back box on mine and it cost £675 + VAT - I think it was so expensive because it was a one off ie. going from 993 heat exchangers and needed to be small enough to fit in a SC body.

Bl00dy marvellous sound though - the whole street turns around from 50 yards away when I rumble down the road.

 
Hi Richard, Not sure about the whole system as I seem to recall someone saying that replacing the heat exchangers greatly reduces the in car heater output. I realise I may get slated for worrying about such trivial things but without a heater the wife go near the car[8D] If Simon from essential is around maybe he can help! He is quoting around £325 for a rear box

Well the rolling road test has yet to be performed. Based on the seat of the pants feel I' d say that there is almost no difference in performance. The car certainly feels faster, but I think the sound makes me feel that way.

There is strong and substantive evidence that the reduced back pressure of a free flow exhaust impairs scavenging efficiency of the 3.2 @ lower revs. This reduces cylinder filling, hence torque. However, @ high revs, it might well be improved, and it is this step (transition point) that the car " feels" faster...a bit like a 2 stroke when it is " on the cam" .

Don;t forget the only way you get to those nice " high revs" is via those low torque low revs....

I heard (very recently) that a very very well known Porsche specialist tested half a dozen sports exhausts in the UK and they all lost torque. Indeed one of the Club Sport owners I know, had his car " improved" in the same way and commented that it felt much peakier / faster, etc, but on the rolling road had lost 20bhp... needless to say he took off his improved (but nice sounding) exhaust in favour of an engine re-map and gained +7bhp...
(making 248now)

PS - the SC is an althogether different matter - they always gain with SSI ' s / equal length primaries etc...
 
Seconding Steve' s comments. I spoke to Jack at Autofarm about this and he confirmed that they had tested SSIs on a 3.2 with various mufflers and could not find any improvement.

It is very hard to get real hp increases from a 3.2. I would recommend you stick with the standard exhaust arrangement especially if your heat exchangers do not *need* replacing. You can fit a nice shiney pre muffler (go for standard pattern as the straight bypass pipes reduce power) and a nice shiney stainless backbox with one or two big fat stainless pipes. This will look good and sound good and will weigh a useful 20lbs or so less - which is better than nothing - but don' t get your hopes up for real hp increases. You will also walk away with your wallet lighter by only 4-500 quid.

When you say you have an induction kit, what do you mean? Just a cone filter kit or a hot film mass airflow kit? Sorry if this disappoints you, but a filter will almost certainly do nothing but make a nice noise (which in my book is reason enough to spend a little cash) and mass air flow will do little without other mods. It is reckoned to be 6-7 hp by itself and is often referred to as the icing on the cake after you have done 3.4 litre Ps&Cs, cams, ported + polished heads etc. Again, makes a great noise though.

Do you have before and after dyno charts by any chance?

Curious to know more. If you have some cash to throw around I will make some suggestions as to how to make real horsepower...

Hi Richard, The induction kit is indeed the cone type and I think what I am looking for is probably sound more than BHP gains (if I wanted to go faster I guess I could have bought a Turbo) I like the way the car performes as it is and am really looking for a better sound. But which re box to go for is the question? I see Simon has Dansk rear S/S boxes for £275.00. Your thoughts?
 
No personal experience with the Dansk, but the Pelican and Rennlist guys in the US like them a lot. They seem to be the most popular choice as a replacement rear box.

My recollection is that people say that the single outlet 84mm makes a nicer deeper sound at idle and a more Ferrari-esque sound at high revs (as all stainless systems tend to sound) but not too loud at cruising rpms and without and droning or nasty reverb. Dual outlet is louder.

A search on Pelican will yield many threads on Dansk rear mufflers.

Neill... not sure why the [:mad:] comment crept in, but anyhow, I run a standard exhaust on my car.. as richard mentioned, Sounds and looks might be important, but I' d only ever fit OE boxes despite the " Max Power" attraction that lurks inside me for a rorty noise and outlet pipe like a bazooka....

I would go SS via Dansk, but would not go free flow unless I changed inlet to carbs or the cams.

Hi Steve, The[:mad:] was I thought it was obvious once i had written it that you would be running a standard exhaust! No offence intended. I think on reflection of all the advice that i will fit a rear ss box (for sound and looks) and leave the rest alone.
