Sports exhaust ?

Hi all, am fairly new to the 3.2 Carrera having been a 964 owner before.

Has anyone here fitted an aftermarket sports exhaust system to their 911 ? I am thinking of getting the fabspeed rear muffler and cat bypass, but its not cheap ! Anyone here got a fabspeed or heard one ? or other recommended units ?

I find the stock muffler too dull, drone like and want that flat six growl and bark but nothing too ridiculously loud.

thanks
Mark

I've got a full Dansk S/S system, including heatexchangers. Cat (car originally sold in US) was bypassed with a straight pipe but has to have a fitting for the Lambda probe so that the ignition/engine management system works.
Lots of systems out there but apparently few give any additional power. My setup gives a slightly louder more aggressive sound but isn't loud and doesn't have any nasty resonances. Drive on a light throttle and it is very close to standard. Mash the pedal and you hear the difference.

I had a similar dilema about 2 years ago when my 85 carrera exhaust gave up, looked around at the variuos options and went for the Hayward & Scott stainless steel system, not cheap at £1600 + Vat[:(], but should last forever, the sound is to die for and possibly get a few more bhp from the engine. The main problem with changing the exhaust is the exhaust manifold bolts which tend to be seized into the head. A good gargae should know what they are doing.

There are some vidoe clips on the net detailing the sound of the Hayward & Scott exhaust, once you have heard that noise you will definately want one.[:)]

I bought an 85 wide body Cabriolet with a RUF Stainless Steel exhaust on it. It makes a very deep low rumble at idle and a an impressive mid range roar even under mild acceleration. Mind you it has also had the engine modified by RUF with a RUF conversion - bored out from 3.2 to 3.4 & new valves but I think the exhaust is the key to the note it provides.

Happy Shopping!

thanks for the replies gents.

Yes i am hoping to get away with just changing the rear muffler and CAT bypass. The cross over pipe doesnt look a million dollars at the connection end to the CAT bypass though. I dont want to spend an absolute fortune or open a can of worms and end up having to change the whole system. The fabspeed 2 bits alone come to about 1K.

Will check out that Hayward and scott system sounds.

Hi - I have a B&B system that has a nice sound (not too far from a std pipe just deeper and slightly louder) my dad has a Dansk and that is prob a touch quieter and not so deep.
My dad had his system new and I got mine S/H.
As they are SS and will last for ever a good way to save a few quid istoo look for a S/H one, usual places PP in the classified ads or flea-bay is a good place to look.
Good luck with the project and the car!

Cheers

Adam

They'll only last 'forever' if the flanges are stainless steel not all manufacturers do this and use mild steel for the flanges and stainless only on the pipework.

Worth looking into before you hand over your wedge. Incidently when I replaced all my exhaust system with stainless stuff the pipework of the original mild steel factory stuff was still very serviceable it was just the mild steel flanges that had rendered the system unuseable.
