although my car had various options i havent got the sporst chrono pack. im not bothered about the stop watch etc but i want the sports button. can this be fitted? and if so how much do we think? and will it make so much difference that ill be really happy i went for it. having just seen a replay of when clarkson drove the canary yellow 997s with the sports button im wondering what im missing out on. tks

Don't think you are missing a lot unless you change up to a Turbo! A more aggressive engine map, timing functions plus a few function control benefits. To the best of my knowledge you can't retro fit SportsChrono (ask your OPC), but you could opt for a fabulous sports exhaust system, with an internal "sports" switch to open or close the rorty valve!!!Sounds like you need one!!!

really helpfull and u are so right I do need a sports exhaust. As I'm typing now I'm sat at gatwick airport where they have a lambo gallardo on display. Gotta say, it sure is pretty! I just wondered wot a difference 2 acceleration the sports button would make

Having had the Sports Chrono pack in my manual 997S, I decided it was not worth having it in it's Cayman S successor. I don't miss it. However, if you go for Tiptronic I gather it is great.

As for the switcherable sports exhaust (nice to turn it off sometimes), it is rubbish on the Cayman S, but I gather ok on the 997S. It was fabulous on the 996 C4S, but since then new rules have been introduced in Europe to ensure that at low speed 25 - 40, it is muted... very PC. Thus, even with the exhaust selected to noisy, it is still quiet until you reach 40. Hmm, of course you can do what I did and ask your OPC to ensure it is on all the time, but that defeats the object of the switch, Moreover, the Porsche system is just the rear pipes. Tubi and other companies make complete systems. Make sure you hear it before buying!

great help chaps. im glad im missing nothing with regards the sports button and the switchable exhaust ill get done when the car actually need a new one. after a month of owning the car all the suspension bushes went and my local opc told me they were not covered under warranty. fortunately the supplying dealer covered the cost but having just read porsche world i find that these shud be covered under warranty...interesting

Dont wait for the current exhaust to wear out because it propably never will in the time you own the car! If I could spec my car again with only 1 option it would be the sports exhaust! Its that great, especially if you pull the little brown plug off in the engine bay to make it always on - Very loud!

My OPC did it for me at no cost, then re-connected it again when I asked.... no charge. It is nowhere as good on the Cayman as on the 997

I mirror Adam's comments - The PSE is fab, nearly 10k miles in now and it it much much louder and sounds great - you get it fizzing and popng on the over run Fab.

I suspect the cost is prohibative for a retro fit "Sports" mode but I quite like it. Not the silly clock but combined with the PSE and PASM it does change the character of the car. The throttle become far more sensitve to inputs and the response from the engine that much more immediate it also backs off the traction control a bit so you can get a bit more drifitng and slidery going before it interfere's.

You can argue that in reality it isn't an faster so is a waste but it really does change the character and feel of the car from a bit of a GT to a complete back road beast.

I realise I am in a minority here but living with using both normal and sport modes (PASM always on soft for UK roads mind) for nearly 10k miles and a year, you really noice the charact change and it does FEEL faster, even if it isn't .

I'd choose the option again.

really interesting comments. i noticed your also from essex. can i ask where abouts? im in dubai at the moment on hols so a bit slow answering messages. i have had a few dealing with opc colchester and although my service is not until november im a bit concerned about using them. i bought the car from opc sutton coldfield who were great. within a month of owning the car all the suspension bushes went and colchester told me these were not covered under warranty and tryed to charge me. opc sutton coldfirled paid for the repairs as id only just bought the car but i think colchester were wrong with this. according to an article in gt porsche this month suspension bushes are covered under warranty and this was a common fault. makes me suspicious. i got thinking about the exhaust note thing as i spotted a re run of clarkson driving the yellow 997s on top gear and his comments of what a difference the sports button made and the fact in sporst mode it goes round the nureburg ring (spelt wrong im sure) 20 secs a lap faster than the old model......cheers for the imput chaps

Speed Yellow, Please [:D] Was it an internet clip you saw?

The sports pack is more than just a stop watch and a noisy exhaust. By far the best bit is the more aggressive throttle mapping in 'sport' mode which increases response when quick driving and also reduces the effect of the PSM allowing a little more oversteer for the more experienced driver. This combines to make the car feel faster even though there is no actual power increase! The noise from the PSE is orgasmically-good on fast, twisty blacktop, especially in a cabrio, but you wouldn't want it permanently 'on' as constant-speed motorway driving would be very tiring. Then there's the soft/hard options for the suspension if you have the PASM system on the S. I find the soft (normal) setting perfect for 95% of driving conditions and would only use the 'sport' suspension setting on the track or on some of the better Welsh roads - it's a bit hard!
