Sports seats

Apart from possibly Mr Paxman, does anyone find the hardback sports seats a bit lacking in "support" ?

If I haven't sat in the car for a while I initially feel like I am sitting in a hole. Minor problem really - they are far more comfortable on a long journey than the dreadful Recaros in my old Audi S3.

Does anyone know if the seat squabs compress with age and can they be refurbed ?

Cheers, Rob

Hi,

How many miles has the car done?

I had the padding on drivers side seat base on my (non hardback) sports seats replaced at Southbound, and it transformed the comfort of the seat. The old base was completely knackered - broken, ripped and compressed

For support, they are, in a word, crap. Slightly better than comfort seats, but not much.

Sports seats from earlier 993s and the 964 are a world apart, they hold you in so much better and are more comfortable. I decided against bidding for a pair of these seats in marble gray and I regret it every time I take a bend at speed.

43000 miles. I had a good look under the seat and the spring mesh is fine, foam pad seems like new too.

I have a pair of electric sports seats from my '95 993 which I will put up on ebay at the weekend, excellent condition and with the electric adjustment, up down / tilt, in black.

These are the "proper" Porsche early sports seats with high side bolsters hold you fantastically, but not as light as the SPG's I replced them with

Just a thought?

PM me if interested

John

Rob, I have the hard back sport seats and almost same miles as you - and I find them very comfortable - including on some very long journeys.

Hi Mark, I agree - they are very comfortable on a long journey, and lateral support is OK. I just feel a bit low down when I first sit in the car. I've had several cars with low slung seats before (Caterham, Elise); I was just wondering if anyone else felt thesame and had found a simple cure.

PS: How do you carry the Santa Cruz on the 993 ? [;)] I had to buy another car for the bike !

Hi Rob, well - I'm working on this! Currently I have to carry them on back of a RAV4[]. But I've now managed to acquire a pair of genuine 993 roof bars (amazingly well engineered piece of kit). But next I need to find or make a roof based bike carrier that is compatible with its thick alloy bars. (relates to my thread on taking car to Spain in the summer...[:)])

What colour is your car? It looks really good.

Mark, I'd be really interested to hear how you get on with the roof bars. It's frustrating having to take the dull car if I want to bike as well.

The colour is Aventura, a very dark metallic green, almost black in poor light. One problem is no one seems to have touch-up paint in this colour...

hi guys i have the genuine 993 roof bars and i use a thule bike rack (will find out the model later on and let you know) must admit i get some funny looks on the way up to wales with the bike on the top.

Hi guys - the thule bars that I have have no model number on plus I've thrown the box - have checked on halfords and they no longer stock these Thule bars. However the halfords value cycle rack look extremely similar - as you say its all down to the length of the U bars that attach to the 993 bars - these should be worth a look in Halfords - hope this helps.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for looking for the part number.

Yes I've looked at the ones in Halfords too. They are quite a cunning design in that the Ubolts are staggered to fit different depths of bar - but still don't work because they assume deep bars will be thin on the horizontal dimension!

I actually have a Ubolt next to my computer because I've been searching the web trying to find somewhere that sells the right size of ubolt - you'd expect there to be a ubolts.com that has every conceivable size, but no.[8|]

Next time I'm near the OPC I'll drop in and see if they have their normal KN display (has a bike on it) and see how the OP bike rack fits the OP roof bars - think it uses the slot on the top of the bars. That might give me a solution - like a simple bolt and washer with a lockable wing nut on top.... this story will continue....
