New to the forum, and I'm guessing this has been covered before, but heregoes anyway..

Has anybody had the above mentioned sports short shift fitted? What does it do to the feel of the gearchange and driving experience? Worth bothering with or just buy more petrol? Any other comments?

Andrew

ps It would be fitted to a 2.7 5-speed.

Our local owners that have one use the B&M.

I've got the B&M fitted to my S (without the bean-can). Big improvement to shift feel - requires a much more positive shove to change gear. Also, the parts in the kit are of a better quality than fitted as standard. I found the standard shift is distinctly limp-wristed, so the B&M (or the Porsche version) was a must-have. Pretty straightforward to fit too. Go for it.

I understand the B&M and Porsche items are distinctly "similar"...

Nope. One is blue and the other is black.[:D] And one cost more than the other.

To have the Porsche version fitted by Porsche takes 1.5hrs apparently - at close to £100/hr incl. VAT it would be about £150.

My car is still within its warranty - well it's not more than 2 years old yet - and I would not attempt this as a result.

It's a diy job and shouldn't take you more than an hour - I'm no mechanic and I managed without problem. I think I got mine somwhere like this. ToolPants usually has brilliant pics & instructions for these jobs ...

There are still people (ME) who would appreciate any help with the actual fitting of the short shift>
Do any of the linkages need to be "locked" into place whilst changing the lever?
Does a bench strip down need to be done, or can all the work be done in the car?
Are there any torque settings needed and if so what are they.
As can be gathered from this note all information/help would be greatly appreciated.

George Flower.

George, it's been a while since I did mine so the exact process isn't fresh in my mind. There's quite a bit of info around on installing, as examples see here and here. Theres a pretty comprehensive install guide that comes with the B&M kit which steps through the entire process - don't know if anyone still has a copy? As to your questions:

Do any of the linkages need to be "locked" into place whilst changing the lever? - You don't have to - the linkage assemblies can be disconnected completely in-situ - theres some discussion and pictures in the links above. Saves hassle if you do it this way.

Does a bench strip down need to be done, or can all the work be done in the car?
I did mine in the car simply because I haven't got spare bench space - it would be easier if you can do it off the car, but as I said, it's do-able in-situ.

Are there any torque settings needed and if so what are they? - No. The unit has adjustment via a set screw - adjust until there's just enough play for the lever to self center, and thats it. Its adjustable too, so you can re-tweak it later if the shift loosens.

Tips - when removing the existing plastic bushing from the stock shifter, the B&M instructions say cut them off with a utility knife - use a hammer and chisel instead. CAREFULLY. Otherwise you'll spend ages trying to cut through the plastic. You'll be replacing the entire assembly so none of the plastic bits get re-used.

If you have leather handbrake - protect it. It's a bit of a fiddle removing the centre console and it's quite easy to scrape the sides against your seats/handbrake. Better safe than sorry.

It all sounds complicated, but if I can do it - anyone can. Just take your time. I love the feel and weight it gives to the shift.

Here are the instructions.

B&M

The only thing is the instructions do not tell you is to mark the location of the shift cables before you remove them.

We usually get Aileen to come over to our work on cars days when we are doing a short shift install. That way we can drink beer while she does all the work.

I have the B&M unit fitted and it is so much better than Standard!

I paid to have mine fitted £80 in all!

I did have 4 of them at one point but I have now sold them all!

Thanks Carl,
I have just fiited mine....Bl***y fantastic...well worth the cost and the effort.fiddly at times but not difficult.
To mark the original locations of the two cables I just wrapped some white sticky tape round the rear cables so that they just touched the back faces of the housing couplings.
Tahnks again,
George.
