Spotted car for sale!!

Saw a 1991 964 c2 tonight privately advertised and all in all in v nice condition with only a few minor blemishes to fix.
However, its LHD and imported from Germany in 1998 and the servivce record for the car is only from this point at a garage in london. The odometer was replaced in 1998 with one in Miles rather than in Klms and the old one is "lost" from a previous owner and was changed because it needed to be in miles for the UK apparently!. The current "mileage" states 29,000 but obviously there must be some miles clocked up between 1991-1998 but the seller was told the car was kept in a collectors garage for years so clocked up limited use.
I have to say it looks very honest and the previous owner spent fortunes on it but does the lack of history prior to 1998 make it a no go??? also what would be its value working on the lack of history but its in v good condition. HELP!!!!!!

if I were considering buying such a vehicle I'd be far more interested in the last 7 years' history /service records rather than the first 7 years

the fact that the 1st 7 years' history is missing and the cumulative mileage is seemingly unknown just gives you more scope to negotiate on price

I agree that the age of these cars means that recent history is of far more value than it's early history.

Presuming good body work, interior and mechanically sound but no major engine refreshment and still on original suspension, prices for a C2 coupe are starting at around £14K. With a full engine rebuild and new suspension they can get closer to £20K. All IMHO.

LHD is no longer a reason for them to be priced lower than an equivalent RHD car especially because of the interest from people across the channel who want to buy 964s.

Sorry guys I didn't follow the string of emails!!' the asking price is currently 20k. Too much IMHO. Suspension is original I'm assuming and engine won't have been touched In 20yrs apart from normal servicing. It's a tough one

Hi David,

Get a PPI done or get it checked by a real specialist who knows 964s.
Does it have a sunroof ? If not, it's a bonus on a 1991 C2 (I guess it's also manual).
What colour is it ? Interior ? If nice colours and just 50K kms since 1998 (with history for this period), it's a good one.
Value though is a difficult one. Even without service history, the mileage is generally known.
Personally, I wouldn't want to pay more than £15K for such a car, as a 'potential' rebuild will cost up to £10K.
If you still want to go for it, certainly get a PPI with a leakdown test to at least get an idea of the internal 'condition'
Bizzarely, the best way to sell such cars is to mod them as a 2 seater RS-a-like track monster.
They then sell for more money and the buyers aren't bothered about such things as FSH.....they want to drive.
Happy to advise what mods should be done if you follow this route [;)]
If you tell me where you are, I can maybe advise a trusted source in the area to inspect it for you.

Good luck,

Jon

Many tks for offer Jon i may take u up on that depending on the return email i get back! its black on black and in very good condition. The passenger window not working and there are small scratches on both bumpers but no dents and the bodywork matches nicely. It does have a sunroof and needs re-sealing. Im thinking the same in terms of value TBH and i wouldnt be that interested in converting it but an inspection wud be usefull!

Mmmmm Black/Black......nice ![:)]

Then £15K max, considering there's a little tidying to do, but definitely get it inspected.

If/when you want to sell it in the future, you should give me a call and I'll return your money (at least).[;)]

Good luck,

Jon

David, the passenger window not working can be as simple as the switch on the drivers side being clicked in the up position which will cut power to the passenger side. If not that it could also be something simple like a bad switch on either the driver or passenger door.

I hadnt thought it would be a big job. The other job is some minor scratching on the bumpers and the sunroof seal would need replacing. I cant see this guy getting down to a sensile level just yet

Wait, are we saying more or less any C2 is now £14/15K plus and up to £20K for a rebuilt smart one?

Suggests up to 25% inflation over the past 2 or 3 years.

Sadly, My targa is going to be up for sale next month after a little tidying... It's going to be a very sad day!

My employers are just about to go down the pan and I'm investing the money in my own business, so hopefully I will be only a couple of years without a 964[&:]
