Springs and dampers

Hi Guys,

Just having a thought this morning about suspension.... quiet day! Is there any difference between the suspension set up on a standard lightweight RS and a Clubsport RS? Are they both fitted with Bilstein adjustables and if so, are the top mounts etc the same?

Also if I felt the springs and dampers were beginning to feel tired (they're not there yet!), is it possible to refurbish them, or would it be a case of replacement? Any upgrades worthy of consideration or keep them OE?

Sorry about so many questions, but I freely admit that I know bu**er all about springs, dampers, coilovers etc!! [;)]

Many Thanks

Johnny

Bilstein UK do a refurb service which I think from memory is about £70 a corner. This is much cheaper than new dampers and gives the same result other than the outer casing and leg is not refurbed. I beleive if there is fundamental damge to the leg such as a bent rod then they won't be able to help.

Having used this service myself on other cars (though not the RS as its previous owner put new dampers on) I found it excellent, and the only further work needed was really cleaning the threads on the damper body to make sure I didn't thread the spring platforms when adjusting them.

Same suspension on RS & CS versions.

You can upgrade to cup springs, but not ideal for road use as far as I am concerned.

Hopefully Vic will be along to offer the alternative view on relative comfort. [:D]

BY REQUEST.............................Long time since i ran the clubsport, very solid feel does nt begin to cover it .......running Cup Car these days is even nuttier ! With solid engine mounts etc etc u dont just need to be crazy to drive one on the road but unless ur doing 75% track days and just driving to and from the day u can suffer severe barin and body damage driving on the road! The straight rs abt the best all rounder ever built ..........................when u get to track the equation totally reverses and u know why u put up with it !
No age jokes aceeptable ......hideous road experience IMO !

lol [:D]

So the general consensus is that the best set up for all round driveability, is keep it standard, unless you're planning to spend most of your time on track..... or are slightly deranged [:D]

If I do decide to replace/ refurb would it be advisable to change or upgrade the suspension bushes at the same time?

Many thanks, as always!

I have posted this before but if you are refreshing the suspension I would wholeheartedly recommend the stiff axle kit off the GT2 and a good set up.

The stiff axle kit (solid rear subframe bushes) transforms the RS and makes it less squidgy at the rear.

Hi Johnny,

If it helps I have a complete set of dampers that I replaced on mine, You could get those refurbed if you like and then you could send me yours (saves the turnaround wait with Bilstein). I am based in London fyi.

thanks

Julian

Cheers, Julian, but if I do anything, it'll be much later. Had the car in for her annual on Monday, and she came out with a clean bill of health..... thankfully.
I was having a quiet day yesterday and was wondering if an upgrade on the suspension was the way to go when the time comes, or to keep it standard. If the situation changes, I'll give you a shout.

Thanks again.

Johnny

Ok, no problem. I had the same thoughts, one minor mod that I did was fit the gt2 evo track rod ends whIch remove the rubber link piece and make it a solid rod. Lots more steering feel and fEedback, more kickback on the road but that was ok for me as an ok trade off. I have the solid subframe mounts which are worthwhile too.

FWIWquite a popular mod in Germany is to disconect power steering , even fit eletric / switch operated pump , for road work......even saves weight if u go the whole hog! Feel on track glued to road !

Before the rebuild, My Race car has Super cup springs and Pro Track schock absorbers - AKA JRZ. The damping control is very good and to be honest even with the super cup springs it was fine on the road. Now it is fully rose jointed and has solid mounted rear subframe. No doubt it will be less civilised but I have yet to drive it. On saying that the damping control and spring rates won't change so from that respect there will be no change. I come from the extreme end of the scale so, as Vic say's it depends on the amount of tracking the car will get
