Springs and top mounts?

Hi, i'm changing my shocks over to a set of B6's. So I'm wondering while i'm at it should I change the springs and top mounts. My car has covered 80k miles and spent 15 years not moving a mussel. Top mounts seem to be unavailable from Porsche, if that is the case what are my options? Or should mine be serviceable for a bit longer? With the springs, i'd like to lower the car, but not the 25 - 30mm of the springs i've seen advertised. Again what do folk advise?

Hi Andrew, has your car got the Krause top brace on the front struts? If not I'd recommend it.
I don't know the B6's but if they've got adjustable platforms, you can start there.

BTW if you're going to Donnington I will be there so we can talk then.

If you're going with B6 you have to modify the original strut anyway, so why not modify it with adjustable collars and use your standard springs. If you want to replace the springs due to fear or longevity then at least your options are open with adjustable collars... I did mine DIY this summer. link below:

Not used much since due to ECU issues so can't comment on the handling, but I wasn't after a difference setup, it's served me fine for years, just wanted to freshen up the struts....My top mounts appeared to be in good order so was happy to re-use...
 
?? to be honest I don’t want to goto the extra expense of making the front struts adjustable. But I agree that’s the ideal solution. I’ve read about the possibility of using 968 springs, giving a 10mm drop? Is that true?
 
When I replaced my 944S2 shocks with B6, I seem to remember that the top mounts are about £350 each side, so didn't bother. I did the springs at the same time and when I put the old ones side by side with the new ones, I'm glad I did. The old ones weren't even at the same height as each other, never mind the new ones.

The single best thing you can do after replacing worn out hardware is sort out the geometry. My car was fine before the new shocks and fine afterwards, but the geo setup transformed the car. Roundabouts and corners could be taken at speeds that simply weren't possible beforehand. I went to Center (sic) Gravity and you'll struggle to find anywhere better.

What are you aiming to achieve by lowering? If it's cosmetic, then fair enough, but if it's improving the handling, then I'd personally spend the money on the geo setup.

Ah ok, did you go for the OEM springs? COG defiantly do seem one of the best. We’ve a respected chap locally that i‘ll book the car into after all this. It’s my daily driver, so I need it right, but maybe not to COG’s standard.

KLR in the states do a decent set of (adjustable IIRC) top mounts for not much money with mono ball bearings in them. Pretty sure I’ve seen them for beer money prices on AliExpress too but you pays your money you takes your chances with those!

I have the adjustable Racer’s Edge ones with a mono ball and they’re great, you may find with some of the aftermarket mounts that they alter the mounting height of the strut too so this can lead to a height change +/- at the front.

On on my old 2.7 I fitted S2 Konis with 30mm lowering springs and dropped the rear as much as possible on the eccentrics and the sills were perfectly level.
