Springy thingy

The clutch pedal on my '86 Lux has gone unsprung - that is, suddenly it failed to return normally but it still had an inch or two's travel and the clutch still engaged normally, so I was able to drive home. When I had a look at the pedal, I was able to free it easily and it sprang back into position - so far, so good - but after driving it for another fifteen minutes, it did it again. So has anybody had this happen before or does anyone know what it is?

Sounds like the clutch master cylinder has worn out.

As Paul says it is most probably the master cylinder but I had a similar problem with my 86 lux unfortunatley it didn't spring back up and I lost 1st and second sync and had the gearbox replaced what was discovered when the hydraulics were emptied were some amounts of rubber which was breaking down inside the pipe and working towards the nipple causing a valve action stopping the fluid from working most probably not this at all and the safest way would be to do the master and or slave cylinders to be sure

Mine was exactly the same as you describe and a new master cylinder did the trick!
