Sqeuaky brakes

Hi guys whats the usual cause for squeaky brakes when they are applied. Im not sure when my front discs + pads where last changed except that they are newer than the rear which were done in 2008. Is it time to replace them?

If your discs are in good condition and your pads are not approaching their wear limit, you could try applying something like Copaslip to the pad backing plates. Squeaky brakes are sometimes caused by stiction between the backing plate and the caliper which a small amount of lubrication can help to reduce.

Or, it could be that your brakes would benefit from just a good clean-out.

Personally Chris, I wouldn't let the pad thickness get below 2-3mm but I'm not sure when the brake pad warning sensors actually cut in.

According to Porsche 996 Essential Companion

Warning light comes on at pad thickness of 2 mm, but advises replacement at minimum of 2.5 mm to avoid sensor wear/replacement. Thickness new 12 mm.

Brake disc thickness 28 mm front and 24 mm rear

Maximum allowable disc wear 1.0 mm per side, 2 mm total

I have also read that the inner surface of discs can become corroded even if outer surface looks bright, though not sure this would cause squeaks.

Sometimes, I wonder why I bother...... [;)] [;)]

The wear sensors are at least 4mm diameter, so even when the light comes on there will be more than 2mm left.
