Squeaking belt..

I've never had this problem before so i haven't even bothered finding out what causes it..
What is it that makes the belts squeak? Do they need tensioning? Seems that the alternator is not charging properly or something as with cold engine on neutral and without pressing the accelerator(just on free run) the engine just cuts off..it starts again immidiately if i turn the key or go into gear if the car's still on the move..

sounds like two seperate issues to me .
Charg rate or battery voltage shouldn't effect tick over cold or hot.

re the squealing belts this is caused by the belt edges and the pulley wheel vee becoming polished by the belt slipping on the pulley wheel. It will eventually get steadily worse.It usually stops on backing off the revs and is worse when under acceleration particulay pulling away in first .
If you put a new belt on be sure to roughen up the faces of the pulley vee first. Be aware though that tightening the old belts or putting on new at correct tension will probably knock the bearings out of your alternator or whatever
