Squeaking fan

The heater fan makes a highly irritating squeak on its lower settings. I took the panel off next to the front wipers but there were a mass of pipes (?AC) which put me off proceeding. On Google I found it mentioned, and it was cured with some WD40, however the instructions were not available. Does anyone know of or could point me in the direction of a fix?

Steve,

There are actually two cabin fans. The one on the left is really difficult to get to because, as you say, the a/c pipes get in the way. The one on the right is less difficult but the squealing problem is very common. I've seen mention of the WD40 solution but it rarely lasts - the WD40 will evaporate quite quickly anyway. The only real solution is to replace the bearings but removing the fans from the "squirrel cage" is, apparently the difficult bit. I've seen mention of the problems and solutions on Rennlist so it might be worth doing a search over there.

Dave

Sorry to be thick but what's the CCU fan?
I'm pretty sure the squeak comes from the left side of the dash underneath the pipework of the AC.

I had the same problem with the heater fan on the passenger side.It is possible to gain access by loosening the a/c brackets and
pulling cover upwards.WD 40 did not work for long but Lithium Grease cured it!

Steve,

The Climate Control Unit - the heater control in the dash - has a small sampler fan on the back of the unit which draws cabin air across the temperature sensor. It's this fan that Steve is talking about. It has a habit of squeaking sometimes and could easily be confused with one of the dash fans, although it's not affected by the fan speed. The dash fans will often lose the squeak when you turn the speed up because the frequency of the squeak goes above the hearing range.

Dave has described it perfectly. The CCU fan is known to squeak and can be easily fixed. This is the same fan noise that you hear when everything is switched off after a drive. So if you don't hear a squeak with the ignition off (after a drive) it won't be that which is squeaking.

Hi

Just doing the passenger side fan on my targa. Looks not too bad as i dont have AC!!! .First you need to remove the 2 torx screws on the backplate of the fan then you need to insert 2 screw drivers where the motor is to push the clips down allowing the motor to come out. My bearing has collapsed and damaged the shaft badly the unit a bin job so i just cut the fan using side cutters making the job much easier!! i have a spare which i bought a while back which came with new squirrel cage. I am reckoning about 1 hr job to swap out unit. Dave is right the squirrels cage could be a nightmare to remove as it is splined onto the motor shaft and mine was really rusty but it may come off with a small set of gear pullers and some wd40 if it doesnt you will break it!!! good luck

Right, The fan is now fixed. The worst part of the job was trying to put the torx screws back in with the squirrels cage installed. In my opinion it would be far easier to remove the fan before installing it into the car although it is possible to do without doing this. If you do try to do it with the fan installed then make sure you cover the air vent tubes with a rag or something as its easy to drop the screws into the tube below. (dont ask how i know this!!) but i had to remove the tube to get it out!!!

Good luck

it looks harder than it really is

I also had the same problem requiring a new fan, they are not cheap at £260 plus VAT. I guess it was worth in the end because the squeeking was seriously affecting my early bonding with the car.
