Squeaking from inside cambelt case

Hi guys,

Had my S2 now for a few months and a few weeks ago it developed an intermittent squeak from inside the cambelt enclosure, unfortunately it has now turned into rather a loud constant squeak as soon as the car warms up. Any ideas what this might be, maybe something needs a drop of oil!

Cheers, Mark.

Whatever it is, don't leave it to get worse - that's the way to lose a belt & your engine !
Get the covers off - or get a specialist to check it out.

- on the other hand - are you sure that's where the noise is from?- The belts for the alternator & power steering pumps can often squeal, especially if wet.

I'm quite sure that the noise is coming from the belt enclosure. Could a roller be at fault, and need a little lubrication or renewing?

Could a roller be at fault,

It certainly could be that, but until someone takes the covers off you won't know for sure.

Please, please, please get it checked out asap, do not leave it any longer!

It could be nothing, but it also could be something about to break and cost you thousands - I'm not joking

I fully apologise if it turns out I'm over reacting, but I'd rather look like a worrier than your belts snap and bend valves []

Echo the above advice. Sounds like a roller / tensioner. Either way, a snapped balance or cambelt is bad news...

Having just had a roller fail and rip the belt of for the second time, I am more qualified than most to suggest that any noise is not a good noise.

By the way, the roller on occasion one was 17 000 mile old as was the roller that died last week. Difference being, the first roller took the timing belt and engine top end with it and the latest just wiped out the balance shaft belt and the belt rear cover. £1600 damage on first occasion £885 on the second.

if you have any doubt at all you could try a simple test . Spinkle talcum powder onto the alternator/steering pump belts and pulleys . It should eliminate any slippage tempoarily which will remove any squeal. If it makes no difference then you have eliminated something for sure .
My squeal went away for about 2000 miles so now I know I need to replace at least the alt belt and possibly the alt pulley but the cam belt was not at fault

i've had a squealing alternator belt before. don't you usually see the current dial drop mid squeal? and pop back up when it finishes? (current / currant dial may not be the proper word for it - Ammeter? the one next to the clock - y'know ;) )
