Squeaking noise when full lock

Hi there,

I noticed this a while ago but haven't thought much of it, but when turning full lock (left iirc) there's this horrid metal on metal squeaking noise which seems to be independent of wheel speed. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Power Steering pump?

I seem to recall this being fairly "standard" and nothing to worry about.
But this didn't stop Camtune charging me a fortune to rebuild mine several years ago, I subsequently found that Porsche were, at the time, doing exchange ones much cheaper...[]

The common noise is not as loud as my take on the OP's description. If I'm right I'd suggest it's a slipping belt. If it is the common noise I'd describe it as a howl that seems to resonate through the front of the car.

its a definite metal-on-metal noise, or something to that effect so i don't think it could be a belt going or it would do it all the time?

When the steering gets to lock the resistance against the pump turning increases as the fluid is no longer moving the rack. That extra load can usually be heard as a straining sound but if the belt slips on the pulley more readily than the pump bogs down then it could be the belt. Then again you probably know full-well what a slipping belt sounds like so if it's a different sound then that won't be it.

hmm, its been a while though so as soon as its back on the road ill look at it (cam cover is in the kitchen....[8|]). What would i need to do to sort either of those out? The noise is industrial sounding and makes the car sound a lot older/shabby than it is (imo [:D] )

If it's the belt then in my experience it will need a new one as they polish / harden when they slip and never grip properly again. If it's the common noise then changing the fuid sometimes helps but really they all do that.

I don't think its a "common" noise, this can be heard up the street, my girlfriend took it up the street, turned around and came back and i heard the noise as she turned around.
